The following are the UNSWOC procedures following an accident:

  1. The trip leaders and leaders in training are to deal with an incident when the incident occurs by managing all participants, and calling for help via appropriate methods. No participants are to be left on their own during an incident. The trip leaders are to notify the executive of the incident.
  2. After help has been received and the incident has been resolved, preserve ALL evidence, documentation and communication of the incident. Store this evidence, documentation and communication records in the google drive under “Safety and Training” -> “Accident Reports” -> “Evidence”. In this folder, make a new folder for the specific accident including the date and location of the accident.
  3. Advise the involved parties and participants of the pathways they have available to seek help (if required). These pathways include, but are not limited to:
    • Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS): 93855418 - students only
    • UNSW Psychology Clinic: 93853042
    • Lifeline: 131114
    • Beyond Blue: 1300224636
    • UNSW Health Service: 93855425
  4. If an insurance claim regarding personal injury is needed, firstly notify ARC and then:
  5. Ask the involved club members to, either collectively or individually (preferred), fill out a UNSWOC Incident Report Form (simplified version here or detailed form if necessary).
    • The trip leaders, and/or executive are to use these incident report forms (if permitted by the involved parties) to write a safety bulletin which is to be posted on the club website for educational purposes and future reference.
    • A backup copy of the safety bulletin post is to be saved in the google drive under “Safety and Training” -> ”Accident Reports” -> “Safety Bulletin”.
    • The completed incident report forms are to be stored in the google drive under the sections “Safety and Training” -> “Incident Reports”-> “Completed Incident Reports”. In this section a new folder is to be created for the specific incident using the date and location as the title.
    • A simplified version of the UNSWOC Incident Report Form is made available on the UNSWOC Website for persons involved to fill out, regardless of the gravity of the incident.
    • If the Safety Officer (or other Exec) deem that the particular incident is of such gravity that greater information is required, then they should provide those persons involved with a physical or electronic copy of the UNSWOC Detailed Incident Report form to fill out.
    • The UNSWOC Detailed Incident Report form can be found here:
  6. Finally, after the accident has been processed check in periodically on those involved to ensure that they are alright physically and emotionally.
