Hey kids, wanna try some crack?
Come discover the dark arts of trad climbing and leave the small crimps behind in favor of cracks!
What is trad climbing? The trad is short for traditional climbing, the kind of old school climbing that the white beards did back in the day. The key difference between trad and sport is that there are no bolts, and you place your own protection while climbing.
Amelia Kaag and I will be running a beginner trad climbing trip, please feel free to come along with all skill abilities! We will be setting up lots of top ropes so you can experience trad for your first time (without the fear of placing your own gear). We will also be showing any keen beans the basics of placing trad gear.
Zig zag is a lovely crag in my home town of mount Vic and has a good number of easy grades to introduce you to the trad climbing style, along with a few more challenging ones too.
Expect a 15 minute walk in, and then to hangout at a cliff, taking turns climbing and belaying. Please let me know in the comments if you’ve climbed before, if you know how to belay top ropes (like at the gym) or lead belaying, if you’ve got a car driving back to Sydney, and your favorite bird.
What you will need:
Climbing gear: A harness*, a helmet* and locking carabiner* attached to an ATC* (* = club will provide it). Optional but recommended chalk bag and climbing shoes.
For clothing: Sport clothes. It can get quite hot or quite chilly, so be prepared for both.
For eating: 2L of water, plus food and snacks.
Other gear: sunscreen, medicines if you need them (asthma puffer, etc).
