The Colo River is a lovely wild and remote river in the Wollemi National Park.
The Colo River is also home to the Leptospermum Spectabille Colo River Tea Tree, a species found only amongst the rocky soils between the sandstone boulders of the Colo River. Also a great spot for a swim, nestled between the steep cliffs.
Considering that it’s late spring, I thought it’s worth a visit!
Best case: cool plant. Worst case: fun river and a nice swim.
Walk Stats:
Up to 20km.
6km of bushwalk (hard), and likely 2km of walking up the river before I admit defeat on not being able to spot the tiny little flower.
An additional 8km of firetrail is also potentially possible, depending on how NPWS feels with keeping gates open and letting us drive all the way to the carpark.
800m+ of elevation gain. The descent/ascent is steep and not too easy.
What to Bring:
- Sun protection: Hat, Sunscreen, Sunglasses
- Snacks and Lunch
- Plenty of water (at least 2L), and some Electrolytes
- Sturdy shoes, weather appropriate clothing
- Swimmers / change of clothes!
- The river will be lovely to swim in before we slog out
- Drybag for valuables, you may get wet
If you are keen, please mention in the comments:
- If you have a car and how many spots
- Previous hiking experience
- The prettiest flower you’ve seen
