Day Hike – Staples Lookout to Pindar Cave (Brisbane Water National Park)

Hey folks!

Oliver and I (Caity) are running an intermediate day hike this Saturday (29 April) in Brisbane Water National Park. Our plan is to start at Staples Lookout & hike to Pindar Cave (and back). It should be a fun hike with pretty views, an amazing cave and a couple of waterfalls to swim at along the way.

This is a 20km “moderately challenging” hike, so some hiking experience is necessary. However, it is a day hike with a well-marked track, so you don’t need any experience with navigation or overnight hiking! 🙂

As this is not an overnight hike, there should be no need for sleeping bags, tents etc. You will need the gear listed below, a comfortable backpack or hiking pack to carry everything in & appropriate shoes for the hike (sneakers or hiking boots). The track notes recommend long pants and long sleeves.

 What to bring

• RAINCOAT – There has been a lot of rain here recently, so there’s a good chance you’ll want this
• Water – at least 2-3L is a safe bet
• Lunch/Snacks – Please bring enough food for a full day of hiking and snacks that you can eat on the go.
• Comfortable Shoes/Boots and optimally thick non-cotton socks
• Warm jumper
• Breathable clothing (recommended long sleeves and long pants – both for sun protection and any potential bush-bashing)
• Insect repellant (if you have it) – we may have some fun with leeches
• Sunscreen/Hat (and extra sunscreen to reapply throughout the day)
• Swimmers & towel – if you feel up for it, there should be a couple of swimming spots and I very much plan to swim!
• Money (in case we want to celebrate with a trip to a local pub at the end).

Getting There

Woy Woy train station is about a 10-15 minute drive from Staples Lookout (our starting point). This is on the Newcastle/Central Coast train line which runs pretty consistently from Central Station (check Trip View for train times).

As usual, we’ll organise carpooling among trip participants over the next few days. When signing up for the trip, please leave a comment indicating whether you need a lift or if you have a car & can help with carpooling.
