Aah, Claustral. The gem of Blueys canyons.
Three incredible waterfall abseils into one of the deepest, darkest, longest, greenest slots in the Blue Mountains.

Join Maria, Nick F and I (Stephen) on the Sunday of Boree Log trip exploring this amazing environment, with a possible side-trip up Thunder Gorge and a caving-like scramble to a glow worm cave! We’ll start early on Sunday morning, aiming to leave the campsite by 7:30-8:00.

You MUST have had previous canyoning experience, be confident abseiling, physically fit and prepared for a long day – up to 12hrs. The hike out is steep and fairly long.

GEAR: (* = can borrow from UNSWOC)
Please note that this is a long day, with very few bailout options. Double, triple check you have all of the non-asterisk’d items on this list BEFORE leaving Sydney. Items borrowed from the club will be organised on Sunday morning.

  • Canyoning gear:
    – Emergency blanket (You must carry one on every club canyoning trip. You can grab one from the gear cupboard or at Boree Log for $5 cash)
    – Harness*
    – Helmet*
    – 3x locking carabiner*
    – 1x ATC
    – 1x 120cm safety sling*
    – Prusik cord*
    – Drybag*
    – Headtorch (Ideally waterproof/resistant)
    – Backpack that can fit ALL your gear in and that can get wet.
  • Clothing:
    – Wetsuit*
    – Enclosed shoes with good grip
    – Wool socks
    – Boardshorts to wear on top of wetsuit
    – Thermals to wear under your wetsuit (optional, but helpful)
    – Warm, lightweight jacket to put in your dry bag. (100% mandatory. This is in case we get stuck, and you need to change into something warm)
  • Food:
    – 2.0L Water in bottles (FULL when we leave camp)
    – Substantial lunch (pack it in a waterproof container, and make sure it’s vaguely crush-proof)
    – Snacks
    – Chocolate or something nice to share!
  • Miscellaneous:
    – Any personal medicine (asthma puffer, Epipen etc)
    – A pair of thongs/flipflops to leave in the car (since your shoes will get wet)
    – Phone or camera for photos (optional, and only if you’re prepared for it to get wet if your drybag leaks! Bring a ziploc bag or two to protect it)

If you have any questions, message me (Stephen Roche) on facebook. Write down YOUR ABSEILING/OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE in the comment when signing up and whether you have A CAR (car not necessary but just let us know) 🙂  We will make sure everyone has a SPOT IN A CAR TO GET BACK TO SYDNEY. See you there!

PS. You must be approved for Boree Log to attend this trip!
