What: a rare opportunity to restore Teddy’s Hut located in a beautiful corner of the Pilot Wilderness Area from Dead horse Gap.

The party will be hiking in from Dead-horse Gap carpark, 9km of mostly offtrack walking by the river. Camping at Teddy’s hut (Fri, Sat) and undertaking hut restoring activities under the National Parks Carpenter and Ranger. It will be a very unique opportunity to participate in the restoration of history in a beautiful valley. Tools and supplied for work will be Air-dropped by a NPWS helicopter. You need only to hike in your regular hiking equipment and suitable clothes.

When: 8am Friday  12 April – 14th Sunday 14th April. Driving down to Thredbo area evening/afternoon Thursday. Sunday afternoon 14th returning to Sydney.

Location:Teddy’s Hut, Kosciusko  National Park (Lat Long: -36.53174, 148.34430) https://maps.app.goo.gl/pEDFZ2tESEvv6tCs8

Meeting: 8am Dead Horse Gap / Cascade trail  Carpark (Above Thredbo resort) Friday 14th https://maps.app.goo.gl/pEDFZ2tESEvv6tCs8

Carpooling: Drive is over 5hrs, please Carpool as possible. Use group chat for coordination. The will be a Blue Mountains, Sydney Car and Canberra Car.

Accommodation:Optional Thursday night at Illawarra Alpine Lodge in nearby Smiggin Holes. Friday, Saturday night self-sufficient

Catering: One campfire roast will be provided by KHA. The other evening you need to BYO food. We will be ‘base camping’ at teddys hut. Bring water purification as water will be from nearby streams.

Clothing: We will be at 1600-1700m. Rain, cold winds and cold/hut temperatures can all be expected. Pack for sun exposure, and cold wet weather alike.

Numbers: Approximately 10 members will be able to attend. Not all will be accepted given availability/skills. If you have a white card or hut restoration experience this is preferential. Whilst an ‘easy’ offtrack hike, this is not a beginner trip. You will need to be a completely self-sufficient hiker.

If you have been confirmed as a UNSWOC attendee (IF and ONLY IF) then please Register with NPWS volunteering program:

There will be activities such as fencing, restoring flooring, general laboring, improving drainage and roofing at the hut. Tools will be pre-droped by a NPWS Helicopter.

White Card: If any members have or can obtain a white card this is highly advantageous as these activities are considered construction under NPWS roles.
