Cycling in the club takes on three main forms: Mountain Biking (MTB), Cycle Touring, and Road Riding. As with anything there are specialised equipment if you want to dive deep, but we often run trips that are accessible with vaguely appropriate bikes. To top it off one of the best ways to learn is to follow someone more advanced and most of our Cycling trip leaders have skills aplenty to share! We have a Strava group too: https://www.strava.com/clubs/UNSWOC
Mountain Biking (MTB)
Mountain Biking is a fantastic opportunity to get some adrenaline pumping. Take your bike and point it downhill on the trail on rough terrain, maybe hit a few jumps along the way and generally have a rowdy time. When you get to the bottom turn around and ride back up 😊. MTB is all about the trails, there are a few favourites scattered around Sydney including Manly Dam (Manly Vale), Old Man’s Valley (Hornsby) and H2O (Westleigh), but also, chances are you can ride on many of the fire trails in national parks near you.
Cycle Touring
Dialling back the adrenaline in favour of distance and time, Cycle Touring is all about the journey not the destination. Usually a multi-day affair we load up our bags and set off on an adventure. Aside from the time one of the key differences from MTB or Road is that Cycle Touring is more about the sights along the way than the path you are riding on.
Road Cycling
Have fun commuting? Enjoy the feeling of wind in your hair? Well why not turn it up to 11 with strategic road choice! The name of the game is finding routes that have few cars, good views and an interesting road, why not even add a café along the way. Some club members are weirdos in lycra, but amazing fun can be had on choice roads without looking like a fool (or being extra aero) too.
