Hellooooo!

Jason and I (Sudarshan) will be running a beginner’s canyoning trip to Yileen Canyon.

Get ready for some spectacular views of the Grose Valley, constricted swims, lush sections of constricted canyon, and the crown jewel of a 50m abseil at the very end (maybe not if you’re afraid of heights).

Expect to take upto 7 hours, and you can read the track notes here if you’re keen – https://ozultimate.com/canyoning/track_notes/yileen.htm!

What do I need to bring?

Technical Gear:

  • Dry bag
  • Helmet*
  • Harness*
  • Descender (figure 8)*
  • Safety Sling*
  • 2 x locking carabiners*
  • Enclosed grippy shoes (these will get wet and muddy)
  • Wetsuit*
  • Boardshorts to go over and protect your wetsuit
  • Rain/spray jacket
  • Headtorch
  • Emergency blanket (Please ensure you have this as you will be left at camp without it, can be purchased from the club for $5 or any outdoor store).

*Can be borrowed from the club for free for this trip. Gear will be organised at Boree Log.

General compulsory gear:

  • Warm clothes, no cotton (bring a set of thermals to leave in the drybag)
  • At least 2L of water
  • Food and snacks for the day
  • Personal medication (e.g. epipen, asthma puffer)
  • Backpack to fit all of the above (will get very very wet)

Nice-to-haves:

  • Thongs to leave in the car
  • Gloves to keep your hands warm
  • Neoprene socks to keep the toes toasty
  • Whistle
  • Phone/camera, preferably waterproof or leave in your drybag (triple bag it incase)

Please note, for the packing list we specify NO COTTON as hypothermia is common in canyons, and cotton will only make it worse! People have gotten hypothermia canyoning on a 35 degree summer day.

In the comments please include:

  • Your canyoning and/or cold water swimming experience (it’s completely fine to be an absolute beginner!)
  • What emoji represents you today and why
  • What gear you have/need (preference for those with wetsuits)
  • If you have a car, the number of spots

Attendees

  • Sudarshan Manikandan
  • Marion Barnoud
  • Sonia Chapman
  • Isabella Barnett
  • Michaela Beardsell
  • Max Gobel
  • Jason Brand
