You need to be approved for the main Boree Log event to attend these trips. If you get rejected then you can sign up for another trip, this just makes it easier for volunteer trip leaders. Please be aware that as the weather is unpredictable, trip leaders may need to alter trips accordingly.

Please read the entire post and answer all questions before signing up.

Hi all!

Margot and I (Katie) are running a trip on Sunday of Boree Log to Wollangambe Canyon section 2 at Mt Wilson. Despite this canyon having no abseils, it will be a long day (6-8 hours), with lots of swimming (2.5 km), scrambling and potential for rock jumps.

Participants need to be competent swimmers, good at handling cold water, and prepared (mentally) for some long walks in and out of the canyon (320 m ascent).

Info about the canyon can be found here!

  • Canyoning gear provided at Boree Log event (If you have personal gear it is helpful to bring this along):
    • Drybag*
    • Wetsuit*
    • Helmet*
  • Canyoning gear not provided:
    • Emergency blanket (You must carry one on every club canyoning trip. You must buy one from the gear cupboard for $5 cash or most outdoor stores)
    • Backpack that can fit ALL your gear inside and that can get wet.
    • Lilo or inflatable tube to float down the river on, be prepared for it to pop and make sure it is lightweight as you will need to carry it in and out (you can find cheap ones from Kmart)
  • Clothing:
    • Enclosed shoes with good grip
    • Hat, sunglasses & sunscreen
    • Wool socks
    • Boardshorts to wear on top of wetsuit (compulsory to protect the club wetsuits)
    • Thermals to wear under your wetsuit (optional, but helpful)
    • NO COTTON!
  • Food:
    • 1.5L of water in bottles.
    • Substantial lunch (pack it in a waterproof container, and make sure it’s vaguely crush-proof)
    • Snacks (chocolate or something nice to share!)
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Any personal medicine (asthma puffer, Epipen etc)
    • A pair of thongs/flipflops (jandals if you’re a kiwi like me) to leave in the car (since your shoes will get wet)
    • Phone or camera for photos (optional, and only if you’re prepared for it to get wet if your drybag leaks! Bring a ziploc bag or two to protect it)

If you have any questions give myself or Margot a message on Facebook.

Also let us know in comments:

  1. If you have a car, where you’re driving back to on Sunday arvo, and how many available seats (including driver).
  2. Your canyoning and/or cold water swimming experience.
  3. We will save one spot on this trip for someone who can volunteer to take the club wetsuits back to the gear cupboard on the next Thursday or two after Boree Log. Let us know if you can and that spot could be yours!
  4. Also please comment with the wildlife you would not want to see in a canyon

Thanks Alfie for the event template!
