Hey all, weโre doing a lazy Sunday hike along a ridgeline/neck to Ikara Head, which has some pleasant views of a quieter part of the Grose Valley. The walk is about ~5.6km return and should take 2-3hrs so weโll be ready to head back to Sydney around ~1-2pm (assuming we leave on time in the morning!).
Depending on how the group feels, we can also do a short detour down to the Girraween Cave which overlooks some Blue Mountains hanging swamp.
Be prepared for plants facts if we see anything interesting! but otherwise itโll likely be quite similar to the sandstone heathland/forest near Lockleys Pylon. Most of the things you read online about this place mention a pink flannel flower (Actinotus forsythii) superbloom from a few years back, but since this plant is a fire ephemeral Iโd be quite surprised (and happy) to see even one.

Getting there: Trailhead is 4km in on unsealed roads from Mt Victoria if youโre driving. Note: this isnโt Ikara Head Trail, if youโve gone that far, turn back! Itโs not very well signposted and isnโt even on Google Maps; put 33ยฐ34’08.5″S 150ยฐ16’47.3″E into your phone.
What to bring:
- 2L+ water
- Wear long sleeves, trousers (unless you enjoy being exfoliated by vegetation)
- Enclosed shoes
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
- Raincoat/jacket (ridge tops can be quite windy/exposed, but fingers crossed it wonโt be necessary)
- Lunch and snacks
