On Saturday me and Ben will be running Water Dragon canyon. It has 5 abseils and is very cold so it shouldn’t be thought of as a leisurely liloing trip like the Wollangambe. The canyon itself is an hours walk from the campground, it is therefore well suited to people planning on getting super drunk Friday night and to people coming up Saturday morning, especially those who are taking the train up to the mountains and don’t have a car. It doesn’t take particularly long but is quite beautiful in sections.

To come on the trip you must be able to swim and you must have a wetsuit (I tried the final swim without one and got hypothermia); these can be borrowed from the club but its first come first serve so you might want to buy one if you don’t have one already.

You don’t need to have abseiled before but it is highly recommended you have as otherwise I’ll have to teach you on the spot

Gear list

  • Shoes with grip that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty, such as Volleys from Big W
  • Wetsuit, these can be borrowed, bought second hand at Vinnies or bought for cheap at Aldi or Anaconda
  • Thermals, these are really recommended, you can get top and bottom from either Macpac or Kathmandu for $40, and they’re useful for Winter and around camp as well
  • Small backpack ~20L
  • Harness, abseiling device and carabiner (the club has these)
  • Drybag (to keep your stuff dry), Macpac, Moutain Designs and Kathmandu sell these
  • Snacks and a full lunch (high calories)
  • Any medication
  • Socks made of, ideally wool, then polyester, basically anything other than cotton

I’ve only done it once and that was a couple of months ago so this could be fun.

Stay frosty,

Dion.
