This Sunday, Brendan and I will be running learn to lead workshop outdoors!! We will be headed to the Soft Parade in the Blue Mountains, a great beginner crag with a decent amount of stuff we can hop on to practice our skills. We can spend as much time practicing certain skills as people are keen. This session will be aimed primarily at those looking to transition from indoor climbing to outdoor self-sufficiency.

My first ever outdoor trip in 2021 at the Soft Parade. Great day!!

Some of the skills we’re aiming to cover include lead belaying, clipping, falling and other helpful tips and tricks. We acknowledge that it will be difficult to cover everything required for you to go outside and start climbing by yourself, but hopefully, this can be a good step in the right direction.

Please bring the following:

  • Harness*
  • Helmet*
  • Climbing shoes*
  • Belay device + locking carabiner* (e.g. ATC, GriGri)
  • Safety sling + locking carabiner* (for cleaning routes)
  • Chalk, if you have*

*Gear can be borrowed at the Gear Cupboard at UNSW during Gear Night (usually Thursday evening), please check Facebook for the latest details

Bring along whatever relevant gear you currently own, the rest will be provided by us. In the comments let me know your current experience level, any gear you currently own, and what you’d be looking to get out of this training.

Pre-reading:

These articles cover most of the theory we’ll go over and practice on Sunday so reading them before will help you understand the concepts on the day.

If you have any questions feel free to message us on Facebook.

Can’t wait, see you guys there!
