As the weather gets hotter, the call of canyoning grows louder…

But if you can’t abseil you don’t want to be learning in a dangerous canyon! Hence Luke and I will be running a learn to abseil at 12pm this Friday at Maroubra Qaurry Reserve, near uni. There’s limited spots as I can’t teach a crowd so be quick. You will be practicing abseiling too.

Abseiling is a vital for canyoning, accessing crags, trad climbing and multi-pitch climbing so it’s basically a must have skill. Abseiling is also very dangerous, easy to overlook and make a mistake on, and a lot harder than most people realise since not all abseils are straightforward. Hence learning and being comfortable is important.

WATCH THIS VIDEO BEFORE COMING
Learn To Abseil

and you’ll have some idea on what we’ll be doing. We’ll be focusing on the setting up of your belay plate, a prusik, and the practice of abseiling (although in a canyon generally only the first person uses a prusik and the rest are fireman’s belayed which I’ll teach). I won’t be focusing on the setting up of the anchor and rope which is in the video, but it’s useful to watch too.

We’ll be Either leaving uni at 11:30 or make your own way there, depending on cars.
