*YOU MUST BE A COMPETENT SWIMMER TO ATTEND THIS TRAINING SESSION*

Hi all!

This skills session is targeted at people who want to become a sea or flatwater kayaking trip leader, or if you wish to rent the club boats for personal use. Spaces will largely depend on the number of cars we have available with either roof racks or drivers willing to use the club soft racks. Please add your kayaking experience and why you wish to attend in the comment tab below. If you have a car, please also comment if it has roof racks or if you are happy to use soft racks.

The skills session will run for most of the day. We will meet at the UNSW Tramsheds at 7:30 AM and hope to conclude around 3:30 PM. If you don’t know where that is, here is a pin drop. From the Tramsheds we will drive to Kyeemagh to be in the water most of the day. The skills we hope to cover are:

  • Correct handling and loading of boats onto cars
  • The club gear available for use
  • Towing
  • Heel hook rescue
  • X-rescue
  • Rescuing a trapped or unconscious paddler (Hand of God rescue)
  • Cleopatra’s Needle rescue
  • Using a paddle float for self rescue

For those who have been to pool sessions, we can also cover:

  • Re-entry rolls – assisted and unassisted
  • T-rescues

What to Bring:

  • Swimmers +/ wetsuit
  • Towel
  • Food
  • Water
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Dry clothes
  • Wet shoes *optional
  • Dry shoes
  • Fuel money for your driver

All kayaking gear will be sourced at the Tramsheds. If you need a club wetsuit it is your responsibility to source one from the gear night week 2. We will be in the water almost all day.
