Hello!
On Saturday 6th May, Maddi and myself (Matt) will be running a trip to Jugglers Canyon and Grand Canyon.
Although these canyons are fairly easy, it will be quite cold so we want to move fast. Ideally, you’ve been on a few canyoning trips before and are confident abseiling.
You will also need to arrange your own gear (items with an asterisk* can be borrowed from the club gear shed):
- Harness* (ideally a canyoning harness with bumpad)
- Helmet*
- Wetsuit*
- Neoprene gloves/booties
- 3x locking carabiner*
- 1x figure 8* or ATC descender
- 1x safety* (a 120cm sling is acceptable)
- 1x large drybag*
- Emergency blanket (can be purchased from the gear cupboard, most outdoor stores, and pharmacies for $5-10)
- Backpack to store all of your gear
- Headtorch
- Cash for fuel
- Clothing –
- Enclosed shoes with good grip (e.g. old sneakers) (remember you will climb out in these!)
- Dry and sun-safe clothes to hike in/out of the canyon in
- Boardshorts to wear on top of wetsuit (compulsory to protect the club wetsuits)
- Thick socks
- Light raincoat that is ok to get wet
- Thermal top and bottoms, jumper & beanie (e.g. enough clothing to keep warm in a canyon overnight in an emergency)
- Optional: swimmers to put under your wetsuit, microfibre towel
- DO NOT BRING COTTON CLOTHING.
- Food –
- 1.5L of water in bottles
- Substantial lunch (pack it in a waterproof container, and make sure it’s vaguely crush-proof)
- Snacks
- Any personal medicine (asthma puffer, Epipen etc)
If you have any questions, message myself or Maddi on Facebook. Write down your abseiling / outdoor experience in the comment when signing up, your favourite snack (so we know you’ve read this far), whether you have a car, and how many spots you have. Please be aware that this trip is weather-dependent. See you soooooooooon!
