Hey UNSWOC!

I was planning a simple hike this weekend but things have taken a turn.

We’ve just received intel from the guy I met last night that a small group of lost penguins has been spotted deep in the Blue Mountains. How did they get there? No one knows. What we do know is that it’s our duty to rescue them before the Blue Mountains Panther gets to them!

Trip Details:

  • Date: Today; Tuesday 2025-04-01
  • Meeting Point: UNSWOC Gear Cupboard (near Village Green)
  • Time: 3:30 AM (penguins are most active at dawn)
  • Cost: Free, but you may need to bribe the penguins with fish.

What We’ll Be Doing:

  • A navigation crash course around uni, led by our resident Rogaining champion. We will then take the arc bus to the Blue Mountains.
  • Crossing rivers, climbing cliffs, and possibly navigating quicksand (the Colo River is notorious for Quicksand)
    • Harness not required, we will use the friction of your pants to control your descent
  • Avoiding park rangers who “may not believe” our mission is necessary
  • A brief but important lesson on penguin communication led by the guy I met last night
  • Releasing them into the Nepean River at Penrith so that they can float out into the Ocean

Packing List:

  • Hiking boots, wetsuit, and tuxedo (to blend in)
  • Emergency sardines
  • A large towel (penguins like to be swaddled)
  • An ultralight kayak if you have one. If not, we’ll make do
  • No DHMO under any circumstances – see dhmo.org

Let us know in the booking comments your experience with speaking Penguinese!

If you haven’t figured it out already, this is an April Fools joke. Don’t fret though, there are a handful of trips continuing on this weekend, and I will run a real hiking trip shortly 🙂
