Navigation is a skill that you can never hope to master by reading articles or watching presentations. The best way to learn how to navigate or to improve your navigation is to practice! That’s why I am running a practical orienteering workshop this Wednesday at Centennial Park!
The course will be suitable for anyone, whether you are a beginner or you want to learn some new tricks and tips to enhance your navigation skills. The topics we will cover (both in theory and then practice) will be:
- Basic map reading – Contours and Symbols
- Compass – Orienting the map and bearings
- Route choice – Terrain, thickness and speed consideration
- Advanced topics if time permits
The course will start at 4:30PM and will be done before dark at the latest by 7PM.
We will meet in Centennial Park out the front of Centennial Homestead, see location here: https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/33%C2%B053’39.9%22S+151%C2%B014’00.1%22E/@-33.894424,151.2328138,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d-33.894424!4d151.233361
I might also be able to give a lift from uni if you send me a message on Facebook.
What to bring:
- Running clothes and shoes.
- Water
- A pen
- $1 to pay for the colour printing of maps
- A compass (if you haven’t got one I have some from the club)
IMPORTANT: If you have your own compass PLEASE let me know because they are the current limiting factor on numbers and that way I can open up more spots for other people to come along as well.
Any questions (or if you have a compass) don’t hesistate to get in touch with me (Andrew Barnett on Facebook).
