Scott and I (Pat) are leading a beginner climbing trip to Mt Boyce. This is a great crag to get a taste of trad climbing, with plenty of cracks to shove hands, feet and gear into. You must be approved for Boree Log to attend.
There’ll be plenty of opportunity to toprope, so you don’t need any climbing experience to join this trip. If you’ve got lead experience or trad experience, you’re also more than welcome to join. We’ll be teaching trad climbing skills – the gear we use, how to place gear safely and how to make trad anchors. Depending on how keen and comfortable you are, you’ll be able to mock lead and practice placing gear or even lead some trad pitches.
In the sign up comment let us know how much climbing experience you’ve got and what gear you have already, as well as anything in particular you want to learn on this trip.
We’ll be heading directly from camp in the morning, so most of the gear you need will be provided – you don’t need to hire anything from the gear cupboard beforehand. If you have your own gear, please bring it with you! For this trip, you’ll need:
- Climbing gear: Helmet*, harness*, belay device*, locking carabiner*, climbing shoes, maybe chalk bag, climbing tape or crack gloves if you’ve got them (not essential, but the back of your hands might thank you).
- * These will be provided on the day if you haven’t got your own
- For clothing: Clothes that you feel comfortable climbing in, extra layers and raincoat in case the weather isn’t very favourable.
- For eating: 2L of water, food or snacks.
- Other gear: sunscreen, medicines if you need them (asthma puffer, etc).
Please mention if you’ve got a car when you sign up – the number of attendees will depend on the number of cars we’ve got available.
You need to be approved for the main Boree Log event to attend these trips. Please sign up for only ONE trip per day. If you get rejected you can then sign up for another trip, this just makes it easier for volunteer trip leaders.
Please be aware that as the weather is unpredictable, trip leaders may need to alter trips accordingly
