Intermediate difficulty trip suitable for people with a sense of adventure. You must be attending and approved for the Boree Log main event to sign up for this trip.

Back in the day when Newnes was a thriving mining town, they used to fell trees on the plateau and transport the logs down a canyon. Well, that’s the story I’ve been told. Join me and visit this hidden treasure, which is nowadays known by only a few lucky people!

Timber Chute Canyon

We’ll start the hike from the Newnes campground on Sunday morning, once everyone has recovered sufficiently from their hangovers. The trip is about 5.8 km return (about 4.4 km along tracks and 1.4 km of bush bashing) and will take around 5 hours. To find out what you’re in for, check out this blog post (written by someone else). For those interested, this is a good opportunity to practice your navigation skills. If you want to avoid having your legs covered in scratches and bruises, then this trip probably isn’t the best for you.

What to expect:

  • bush bashing (very steep, no proper walking tracks)
  • some rock scrambling
  • no abseils
  • cool canyon
  • aussie wildlife (snakes, spiders and drop bears)

In the comments section, let me know:

  1. what shoes you are planning to wear, and
  2. how you are getting back home (you are driving / you need a lift)

What you need to bring:

  • hiking clothes (expect warm weather)
  • sturdy hiking shoes (boots with ankle support highly recommended)
  • strong backpack
  • lunch and snacks
  • water (2L minimum, 3L recommended)
  • headtorch
  • emergency blanket / bivvy bag

We also encourage you to bring the following: camera, personal first aid kit, map and compass, track notes, food to share, fancy costume.
