Wedding Cake Rock Will Collapse

I’m sure we’ve all seen photos of, or even been on top of, the insta-famous wedding cake rock. It’s along the coastal track from Otford to Bundeena and a lot of people don’t seem to realise how incredibly unsafe and undercut a formation it is. Perhaps some feel that since everyone has been fine so far, they’ll be fine too! But I urge you to not take the risk, because that’s no guarantee it won’t collapse today. Appreciate this beautiful feature while you can, by looking at it, but not going on top of it.

If you’ve ever seen the colossal boulders at the bottom of our Sydney sea cliffs or perhaps at Point Perpendicular, remember that they got there by falling from the cliff in the blink of an eye. Geological events happen in real time, and just because something that dramatic is rare on any given day, it doesn’t mean today won’t be the day!

A colleague of mine who’s a geotechnical engineer did the track recently and reckoned it could be a matter of weeks, months, or at best, years, before wedding cake rock collapses. So please don’t take the risk, it sure would suck if you were the unlucky one. Is it really worth it for a photo? And such an incredibly over-done one at that 😉

Cheers, Brendan
