Join Elliot and myself (Hugh) for a fun, big day out of canyoning on Saturday at Boree Log! Make the most of being up at Mt Wilson by exploring somewhere that you can only really access with technical rope skills – I honestly think the canyons are the most beautiful part of the Blue Mountains, and this is your chance to explore a top-tier one! But first:
You need to be approved for the main Boree Log event to attend these trips. Please sign up for only ONE trip per day. If you get rejected you can then sign up for another trip, this just makes it easier for volunteer trip leaders. Please be aware that as the weather is unpredictable, trip leaders may need to alter trips accordingly.
This will be a big day – think 8+hrs start to finish – so you must have a high level of fitness, and some experience abseiling already (you don’t need to have done a canyon before). Expect multiple abseils, hiking on steep and slippery slopes, and cold swims. We will likely only go with a party of 6 so we can move a little faster. Have a look at the notes here: https://ozultimate.com/canyoning/track_notes/bowens_creek_south.htm, and if you’re accepted, it would be good to make sure you’re familiar with them prior to the day. When applying, tell us if you have a car/how many spots (we will need to car shuffle), how much abseiling/canyon experience you have, and importantly, whether or not you think vegemite is disgusting.
It’s critical that every person on this trip has the right gear:
Gear available to borrow from the club (this will all be brought to Boree Log, you don’t need to hire beforehand):
- Harness
- Helmet
- 3x locking carabiners
- 1x Figure 8 / Descender
- 1x Safety sling
- Drybag
- Wetsuit
- Backpack that can fit ALL your gear and that can get wet (30L+)
Other gear you MUST bring:
- Clothing:
- Enclosed shoes with good grip, suitable for water and bushwalking
- Thick wool or neoprene socks – you don’t want freezing cold feet all day
- Boardshorts to wear on top of wetsuit (compulsory to protect the club wetsuits)
- Thermals and raincoat – important extra layers of warmth
- Optional: beanie and gloves (a beanie can be worn under your helmet for warmth, and gloves for warmth and for abseiling).
- Swimmers for under wetsuit
- NO COTTON! (this includes socks, shirts, pants, undies, etc)
- A set of clothes to wear for the hike in an out – standard hiking clothes and hat, preferably long sleeves and pants for sun/insect/snake protection
- Food:
- 2L of water
- An easy lunch
- Lots of high energy snacks to share
- Other:
- Any personal medication (asthma puffer, Epipen etc)
- Sunscreen for the walk in and out.
- Headtorch + spare batteries – preferably a waterproof torch
- Very important: Emergency blanket – (can buy from Gear Cupboard for $5 or from chemists, shops, etc)
If you don’t have everything listed, for your safety we won’t be able to take you on the trip.
If you’ve read everything and feel like you’d be a good fit, apply now! Hope to see you at Boree Log 🙂
