Hi everyone,

Luke and myself will be running a canyoning and abseiling rigging day at Malaita Point.
If anyone has ever wanted to learn to rig canyons or abseiling then is is your opportunity to practice!

Prelearning

Please come prepared to the event with all the required gear and knowledge for you to practice these skills. It would be ideal if you have attended one of the canyoning rigging workshops at the ledge beforehand. Below are some links for you to practice your skills before the workshop.

Gear

  • Canyoning Harness*
  • Helmet*
  • 3x locking carabiner*
  • 1x prussik (Used as a third hand)
  • 1x figure 8* or other canyoning descender – e.g. critter, squirrel.
  • 1x safety (a 120cm sling is acceptable)
  • Emergency blanket (can be purchased from the gear cupboard, most outdoor stores, and pharmacies for $5-10)
  • Backpack
  • Clothing –
    • Enclosed shoes with good grip (e.g. old sneakers)
    • Dry and sun-safe clothes to hike in/out
    • Light raincoat that is ok to get wet
    • Thermal top and bottoms, jumper & beanie (e.g. enough clothing to keep warm overnight in an emergency)
    • DO NOT BRING COTTON CLOTHING.
  • Food –
    • 1.5L of water in bottles (more if it’s hot)
    • Substantial lunch (pack it in a waterproof container, and make sure it’s vaguely crush-proof)
    • Snacks
  • Any personal medicine (asthma puffer, Epipen etc)
  • Sunscreen

Might also do a quick run through empress afterwards for anyone keen.

If you want to do empress after:

  • Wetsuit (4mm+) *
  • Thick socks / neoprene socks

Please be aware of the following dangers before attending the trip: 

For Malaita Point

Loose rock, possibility of rockfall

Scrambling over loose rock near cliff edges

Multipitch abseils at heights

Steep ascents and descents on rough tracks

 

For Empress canyon:

Swims and full emersion in cold water

Creek walking along rough slippery terrain

Abseiling in water flow with possibility of aquatic hazards (Weather dependent)

Scrambling over loose and wet rock

Loose rock, possibility of rockfall

Walking near cliff edges

Aquatic abseil of 30m
