Perhaps you’ve seen photos of canyoning, and would love to give it a go? Or maybe you’re keen to get into climbing, and want to increase your confidence on-rope so you can open up a whole new range of “Abseil in, climb out” routes? Or maybe you just want to have a crack at some of the classic Blue Mountains abseil trips?

Whether it’ll be your first time clipping yourself on to a rope, or if you’ve done it a few times before and want to brush up your skills – this quick, single evening course is to give an overview for complete beginners. Together, we’ll work through:

  1. How to secure yourself to an anchor above a drop using your “Safety Sling”
  2. How to set up, and check both “ATC” and “Figure 8” style descenders
  3. Run through the “ABCDE” Safety Checks
  4. Abseil a simple single-pitch abseil, including some basic techniques for improving confidence, safety and rope damage.
  5. Abseil on both single strand, and double strand ropes – and understand the important differences between the two
  6. Remove yourself from the rope, including some techniques to make it easier when you’re swimming in water
  7. Bottom, or “firemans” belay your mates

What WE’LL bring:
The following safety equipment will be provided by UNSWOC:

  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Safety sling + Locking Carabiner
  • ATC + Locking Carabiner
  • Figure 8 + Locking Carabiner

What YOU’LL need to bring:

  • Comfortable close-toed shoes (runners are perfect)
  • Drink bottle full of water
  • Headlamp or torch – we’ll probably walk out in the dark!

PREPARATION:
Please watch this video before you come – it’ll run you through some of the techniques we’ll be using,
