Hey everyone!

Dion and I will be running Fortress Canyon, the first beginner friendly canyon of the year on Saturday February 4th. Sign up below. We, the first wave, will attack the Fortress at dawn, while the enemy unwittingly sleeps… ie. we’re getting up early! Do I hear 5:30am?

Don’t worry it’ll be worth it, a fun couple of jumps and abseil/jump plus beautiful views and hikes in and out make it a personal favourite. We’ll work out transport and stuff in a facebook message after I’ve approved attendees.

The early start is so we still have sunlight while Dion (since it’s his turn this time) abseils off the waterfall at the end of Fortress. Then ascends back up….
So bring a book/a pack of cards/something to do when you’re warm and dry eating lunch while Dion battles a waterfall.

You must be a current member of the club to sign up, join online today!

LOWDOWN

To get an idea of how things will work and the logistics of how to end up in dry underwear:

There’s a hike to the canyon, you need a backpack to hold drybag, wetsuit, lunch, water, harness, helmet etc. When we get to it’s start we change into wetsuits and harnesses with board shorts over the wetsuit to protect it (and keep your swimmers or undies on under the wetsuit if you like) You put dry stuff like your shirt into dry bags (which have your lunch in them) and put your helmets on.

We then go through the fun waterland of the canyon. Keep snacks and water handy.
We’ll stop for lunch at some point.

At the very end we change out of wetsuits back into the dry shirt/clothes (boardies and undies/swimmers will still be wet though!) to hike back.
Then hopefully you left dry bottoms/shorts/undies/towel in the car and you can change back into them then. Thongs are a must too, for happiness.

GEAR

What you’ll need.

– Backup dry thermal/non-cotton jumper to bring in dry bag

– Wetsuit and board shorts:

Wetsuit can be borrowed from the club. Can also wear a thermal (brought in addition to the dry one) under the wetsuit to be warmer. Wear swimmers or undies under the wetsuit and have boardies to wear over the wetsuit to protect it.

-Harness, Belay Plate, Helmet

All can be borrowed from the club,  go to the gear cupboard yourself on Wednesday evening (gear night)

– Woolen Socks and Enclosed shoes

– At least 2L Water, lots of snacks and lunch

– Backpack and dry bag:

Bring a backpack that you don’t mind getting wet, and one that can also hold your wetsuit, at least 2L of water and your drybag which will hold lunch/snacks and some dry clothes.
Drybags are waterproof bags that go in your backpack, there’s usually space to share one between two but ask around first to make sure.

– Torch:

– Dry clothes to change into back at car.

Feel free to ask us any questions.
Cheers,
Brendan and Dion
