On Sunday June 29th, Marcus and I will be running one of the best day hikes you can get your boots on – the trail out to Gooch’s Crater via Dargan Arch. It’s up near Bell in the Blue Mountains – think fresh mountain air, tons of plants starting to flower, not one but two (2!) crazy geological formations, and maybe even a hidden little canyon to explore.
And it wouldn’t be a walk with me without learning about some of our beautiful native plants and navigation.

Length: 10.8km, fairly challenging terrain. You must be pretty fit!
When: Sunday June 29th, a most-of-the-day trip. Starting at the trailhead at around 9am.
Transport: Carpooling, or a very long train trip. Tell me in the comments if you have a car/how many spaces, and what the craziest thing you’ve seen in the outdoors is.
Who: You, your two trip leaders, about 8 others.
What to bring:
- Plenty of water – at least 2.5L per person. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you can’t get dehydrated, and there’s no water available on the track or at the parking area.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and hat – essential to protect yourself from that nasty UV.
- Snacks/lunch – plenty of high energy food for the whole day.
- Long hiking pants and long sleeve hiking shirt – very important to protect yourself from the sun/wind/spiky plants.
- Sturdy, enclosed shoes like hiking boots or trail runners- definitely not a hike for thongs.
- Raincoat and a warm jacket – no matter the forecast, it could get very cold and windy quickly so be prepared.
- Any personal medication.
- (Optional) Compass – you can borrow from the club gear cupboard. Even if you don’t know how to use it, we can spend time learning in the best possible environment!
- Your phone (charged) with the apps EmergencyPlus, Gaia GPS and AllTrails loaded.
