UNSWOC is run entirely by volunteers - this includes our fantastic Trip Leaders and the Executive Team.

The list of legends that preceded the current executive can be found at the bottom of the page.

Here's a bit about the current Exec:

Amelia V (she/her) - President

Function in the Club: I'm Madame President! I do my best to help the club run smoothly along with our wonderful exec team. If you'd like to stage a coup, please don't. I'll whack you.

About me: I'm a mechanical engineering student who easily gets distracted by much more enjoyable pursuits (like climbing :). I love meeting new people in the club and seeing how much they grow and learn and sometimes even go from complete beginner to trip leader! Come chat if you see me at the ledge!

Outdoor activities: I'm mainly a sport climber but enjoy hiking and camping. I dabble in a bit of everything else and am always looking to try something new. And naps out in the sun if that counts?

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Anything and everything! Reading, crotchet, sleep, baking… The perfect chocolate chip cookie continues to elude me. But I think it might be time to just blame my oven.

Biggest fear:

Myself (deep right?)

Advice:

Some people pack light, some people pack extra snacks. Do what will bring you joy. Pack the damn chicken crimpies.

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Chicken crimpies (rip to all those chickens)

Linna (she/her) - Vice President

Function in the Club: A bit of everything on the backend - gear management, training resources, helping wherever is needed 🙂

About me: I spent 7 years finishing my 5-year double Engineering degree - but hey, we got there! Now I'm trying to figure out how long funemployment can last. I like maps, cameras, and crosswords.

Outdoor activities: Climbing, canyoning, caving, camping, c-hiking

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Stare at my empty wallet, admire sunsets, bum around the library, research next trips

Favourite bit of kit:

Toe socks

Advice:

A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Pistachios

Oli (he/him) - Vice President

Function in the Club: Providing guidance to the current exec based on my experiences in the club and exec, and, working on a few behind the scenes projects for the club operations.

About me: UNSW Engineering Alum now working and enjoying spending my weekends outdoors rather than studying.

Outdoor activities: Cycling, Canyoning, Hiking, Rogaining, Climbing, Caving.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Working and dreaming of being in the outdoors.

Biggest fear:

Cold water

Advice:

Give everything a go when the opportunity presents itself

Advice:

Don't get discouraged if something doesn't work out at first, every adventure has to start somewhere

Jayden (he/him) - Treasurer

Function in the Club: Ensuring the club uses your membership fees to best serve you!

About me: I'm trying to combine my passions for sustainability and numbers! :))
I love making the most of my functional-ish body and brain while I can! (Many sports, dancing, frolicking, deep conversation)

Outdoor activities: CANYONING... I like all the others too (climbing, hiking, kayaking etc.)

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Work, sports and knee rehab, maybe learning to enjoy art :o.
All with my favourite humans 🙂

Biggest fear:

Not peanuts!

Favourite bit of kit:

My Petzl safety

Advice:

Value people you can remove your mask with

Gabriel (he/him) - Secretary and Arc Delegate

Function in the Club: As the secretary, my role is to support the exec as a whole in managment, bookkeeping, event skedualling, and meeting minuetes. Although my spelling may sometimes be terrible, I make up for it with good time management, and delegation of roles and responsibilities, helping the exec effectively solve problems and support our members to the best of our abilities.

As Arc delegate, my role is to ensure that our relations with the university (ARC) stay positive and engaged. Our presence on campus should be massive, increasing the likelihood of more members, and it is Arc's role to ensure this through on-campus events like O-Week and BBQs.

About me: I have been described as the jack of all trades, being a conditionally accredited school teacher, for my service in the State Emergency Service, and Rural Fire Service, and for my dedication to climbing, leading trips for the club (and crushing hard grades on the side).

Weather your car breaks down and you need an engine overhaul in one night, your mum's cabinet snaps and it's got 100 year old Japanese joints that need fixing, or simply that you have a leaky roof, I'll most likely give it a red hot crack, free of charge.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Lots of studying, volunteering, riding my GSXR600 at the speed limit because it's safe and I respect laws…

Sum yourself up in a sentence:

I would say that I'm hardened by fire, but soft and squishy on the inside…. like a marshmallow over a campfire.

Favourite bit of kit:

My rope, as it can be a makeshift blanket

Tastiest outdoor snack:

YABOI LIKES HIS DINO NUGGIES AND SKITTLES

Steve (he/him) - Trip Coordinator

Function in the Club: To schedule trips for the club and make sure cool things keep happening.

About me: People try to label me "another white guy in STEM" or "Forbes Hottest Man 2002->present", but really I'm just a frother for a'movin' and a'groovin'.

Outdoor activities: Climbing, canyoning and you might catch me out and about trying some parkour.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Always chasing a new hobby, currently in my jigsaw + skating era. Otherwise doing uni work in hopes it'll make me better at pub trivia.

Favourite bit of kit:

God I just love my climbing rope

Advice:

Be curious and passionate. Find people who motivate and inspire you.

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Vegemite + anything. Can even be with your finger just don't get too carried away

Caity (she/her) - Safety Officer

Function in the Club: I ensure the club can run awesome outdoor adventures as safely as possible and facilitate opportunities for club members to learn more about first aid and safety in the outdoors.

About me: In my final year of combined Law and Psychology degrees at UNSW. I spent my first 7 years of uni working in law firms during the week and squeezing outdoors trips and study into my weekends (I do not recommend trying to write essays on overnight hikes), so I've taken this year off work to focus on finishing uni, while still adventuring as much as possible.

Outdoor activities: My first love was sport climbing, but my tendons didn't love it quite as much. Now, I do a bit of everything and just love being outdoors in nature. I'm particularly keen on longer hikes and anything that involves being in the water. Very recently, I've started getting into trail running and have some races coming up—watch this space!

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? I have a nerdy love of legal and socio-political youtube channels, books and podcasts. When I'm not consuming these, I'm adding hiking trails to my bucket list, hanging out with my (very needy) rescue dog, Zuby, or attempting to learn a second language.

Biggest fear:

I have a HUGE snake phobia!!! When I was little my parents had to skip past the Car the Snake scenes in The Jungle Book because I was terrified. I'm trying to learn to appreciate these creatures when I see them on the trail....

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Back Country Cuisine's Freeze Dried Apple Pie! I've since discovered I'm allergic to gluten, so I can't eat it anymore :'(

Sophia (she/her) - Events Officer

Function in the Club: Organising and running events outside of trips to promote a social culture in the club and get everyone involved and having a good time.

About me: I'm a second year engineering student who loves to dabble in a bit of everything, usually when I should be studying. I hold the record for worst cold tolerance.

Outdoor activities: Mainly climbing, hiking, and paddleboarding, but I'm keen to try anything.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? You will usually find me reading, hanging out with friends, or on my quest to find the best desserts in Sydney.

Biggest fear:

Starting conversations. And also lead falls.

Advice:

Don't waste time worrying about the past, focus on the present and the future.

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Chicken Crimpies and Dinosaur Lollies (iykyk)

Emily (she/her) - Events Officer

Function in the Club: Getting stoke going for participation in the club by running regular events - and ensuring that inclusion remains the focus

About me: Non-engineer with a mildly underdeveloped pre-frontal cortex. **Kryptonite = lil treats** ie. the kind of hiker that raids a candy store first. Love a yarn (and mayhaps an outlandish hypothetical question) as much as the next guy

Outdoor activities: Just love an adventure innit (any hole and/or incline/decline)

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Getting 24/7 pummelled by a thesis, acquiring concussions, long walks on the beach etc.

Biggest fear:

Feet. A million times feet. And also a Grecian style arena full of toddlers

Strangest thing you've seen outdoors:

I don't carry a mirror in the outdoors for this exact reason

Top place on your bucket list:

Patagonia babbeeyyy

Amelia K (she/her) - Head Gear Officer

Function in the Club: Make sure the gear minions stay on top of your late rentals

Function in the Club: Getting people the gear they need for awesome trips and keeping track of everything

About me: Outdoorsy stuff has completely taken over my life, occasionally I might find some time to finish my engineering degree if I'm not on some adventure or at work in an outdoor gear shop

Outdoor activities: Will always come back to climbing but love anything with ropes or anything snow related, skiing, camping, hiking, climbing mountains… always finding new things to try too

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Planning the next trip… and sometimes have time to tick things off my massive list of DIY projects… (sewing, woodworking etc. )

Biggest fear:

Corporate life

Advice:

Surround yourself with people who inspire you and go on amazing trips

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Aldi cranberry almond trail mix

Zhiheng (he/him) - Gear Officer

Function in the Club: Preparing the gears you'll need for any upcoming trips!! and chasing the long overdue gears

About me: Third year Mech Eng student who loves to try all sorts of outdoor activities. I also love riding motorbikes, even though I've had 3 accidents in less than a year. (Probably skill issue)

Outdoor activities: Rock climbing, Hiking, Camping, surfing or anything outdoor!

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Eat, study and watch pirated movies on dodgy websites

Biggest fear:

Getting a bad haircut

Advice:

If you find a toilet in your dream, don't use it

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Carman's dark choco & cranberry protein bar

Harry (he/him) - Gear Officer

Function in the Club: I office the gear, allegedly.

About me: I own a boat, and a car. My boat currently works, my car doesn't. I am a 2nd year mechanical engineer. I have a tendency to make choices that ultimately result in an extension of my time studying my degree.

Outdoor activities: I like touching rocks, I find it rather grounding. I'm a fan of mountain biking, and crawling into cold, damp, dark, moistly musty holes in the ground. Also big fan of sinking beers outside, never doesn't slap.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Work on my car.

Biggest fear:

That, one day when I'm cruising around the Hawkesbury River in my sick ass boat that has underglow, the back of it will fall off (realistically 60% chance) and my boat motor which my brother owns will sink to the bottom and i will then owe him $2000 which i probably will not have.

Advice:

Get a genuine rabbits foot. A bit unconventional I know, but it's gotten me out of 2 license-suspending traffic violations so far.

Jisu (she/they) - Social Media Officer

Function in the Club: Social media officer, ie. sharing all the cool stuff the club's getting up to over all our socials, providing information for all things UNSWOC related, and making kinda mid memes.

About me: Surprisingly not an engineer, but a "full-time" artist! 👩‍🎨 Though you'll often find me frolicking in the mountains with your unemployed friend on a random Tuesday.

Outdoor activities: Mostly climbing with a side of camping, snorkelling and hiking, but will try anything once!!!

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Yap with my friends over boardgames, dinners, art nights, boogies, errand runs - the activity isn't the main point. Lately enjoying a good fire jam!

Favourite bit of kit:

My climbing shirt 😉

Advice:

Be a good noob, a kind person, and do it scared!!!!

Tastiest outdoor snack:

A juicy, crunchy jazz apple. truly underrated

Jemma (she/her) - Training and Sustainability Officer

Function in the Club: Make sure everyone is trained up to be able to go on epic adventures. Also ensuring we leave no trace & keep the outdoor spaces we love pristine.

About me: Graduate mechanical engineer.

Outdoor activities: Mainly climbing and sailing, with a sprinkle of canyoning when the weather's warm enough.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Normally I only stay in when its raining outside - I need more indoor hobbies lol.

Favourite bit of kit:

Grigri - an absolute game changer for sport climbing

Strangest thing you've seen outdoors:

People make some pretty funny noises when getting through tight squeezes in a cave...

Top place on your bucket list:

Tassie! So much to climb, hike and see there.

Sudarshan (he/him) - Web Officer

Function in the Club: Work behind the shadows to keep our website and trip signups online (and making sure you can read all of the other amazing exec profiles)!

About me: There's something I have to tell you… Unlike most of the people above, I love the outdoors!?!?! I'm also a second year electrical engineering student who loves collecting random information while procrastinating study.

Outdoor activities: Primarily bushwalking, but the club has introduced me to all sorts of activities which I absolutely adore (who doesn't love jamming themself into a dark cave!!!) and I love to try everything.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Sleeping or chasing trains - I'm on a quest to visit every train station in Sydney. 104 down, 76 to go - I've probably visited 5 more by the time you're reading this 😀

Biggest fear:

Dying boringly

Top place on your bucket list:

Finding the home of the Wollemi Pine

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Chocolate is the only correct answer (preferably caramel)
