UNSWOC is run entirely by volunteers - this includes our fantastic Trip Leaders and the Executive Team.

The list of legends that preceded the current executive can be found at the bottom of the page.

Here's a bit about the current Exec:

Rafferty (he/him) - President

Function in the Club: I’m the president, I preside over things. I make sure things run smoothly, and also work with the exec team to choose the direction that the club should move in. I do a little bit of everything.

About me: I’m another engineering student (just what the club needs). People have referred to me as “tall and handsome”, “very well mannered” and “a very strong young man” - if by people you mean my grandma. I typically spend my time either driving to the mountains, or in the mountains. Sometimes I fit uni around my climbing schedule… sometimes.

Outdoor activities: I’m mostly a sport climber and canyoner. I’m very much trying to expand into trad and caving. I’m always keen to try something new. I like to spend as little time in the city as uni lets me.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? I like to cook, I personally think I make pretty awesome pancakes. Aside from that I don’t do much else, mostly sitting around reading (mostly sci-fi - my favourite book is Ball Lightning).

And I also sometimes study…

Favourite bit of kit:

I’m quite fond of my Edelrid Spoc, truly the most physically attractive progress capture device on the market

Advice:

Learn knots - they're very handy

Tastiest outdoor snack:

A nearby wombat, eaten whole

Gabi (she/her) - Treasurer

Function in the Club: "Some say money can't buy happiness, those people have never bought outdoor gear" - Gabi, 2025
My role is manage the club's finances to support our members to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

About me: I'm a UNSW Engineering alumni. I'm passionate about resource sustainability and spend most of my time at work on renewable energy projects.

Outdoor activities: Hiking, camping, running, skiing, I've recently added canyoning, caving and climbing to the roster and keen to explore more!

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Swimming, yoga, volunteer bush regeneration, reading, knitting, sewing & mending, live music, travel...

Biggest fear:

Accidentally joining a cult… this one isn't a cult right?

Favourite bit of kit:

My sun hoodie - saved thousands on sunscreen

Advice:

Take the leap!

Oli (he/him) - Vice President

Function in the Club: Providing guidance to the current exec based on my experiences in the club and exec, and, working on a few behind the scenes projects for the club operations.

About me: UNSW Engineering Alum now working and enjoying spending my weekends outdoors rather than studying.

Outdoor activities: Cycling, Canyoning, Hiking, Rogaining, Climbing, Caving.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Working and dreaming of being in the outdoors.

Biggest fear:

Cold water

Favourite Gear:

My wetsuit and twin gate carabiners are tied first in my mind

Advice:

Don't get discouraged if something doesn't work out at first, every adventure has to start somewhere

Amelia (she/her) - Vice President

Function in the Club: To give advice where I can and to help out where I can! Apparently I am old and wise now.

About me: I'm in the tail end of my Engineering degree, but have probably spent more time on the club than studying. I love seeing so many keen new people come through and how much they grow and learn over time.

Outdoor activities: Mainly a climber, but I dabble in a bit of everything!

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? When I'm not outside, I'll try whatever catches my eye. Parkour is my other main hobby and I love training in the sport. Otherwise, I love to read, sleep, bake… whatever I can! Except for baking chocolate chip cookies. My oven won't allow me. But I'll research recipes and cry.

Favourite bit of kit:

Climbing tape! I use it for everything except patching up my fingers. Crazy versatile stuff.

Tastiest outdoor snack:

CHICKEN CRIMPIESSSSSSS!

Top place on your bucket list:

Space! But I don't think my WAM is hight enough to get a gig as an astronaut. Neither can I sing like Katy Perry.

Sophia (she/her) - Secretary

Function in the Club: My job is to support the president and the committee by organising meetings, keeping up with what's happening in the club, and making sure everything is running smoothly.

About me: I am a 3rd year engineering student with too many hobbies and not enough time. I have an impressive ability to memorise large quantities of useless information and absolutely zero cold tolerance.

Outdoor activities: I'm mainly a climber and a hiker but I also love to get out on my paddleboard when the weather's warm.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? If I'm not outdoors I can usually be found reading, doing a jigsaw, or attempting to teach myself how to play the piano.

Biggest fear:

Waking up in an alternate reality

Favourite bit of kit:

My jumar passed down to me by my uncle

Advice:

Keep trying

Rory (he/him) - Trip Coordinator

Function in the Club: As trip co-ordinator, it's my job to work with our trip leaders and exec team to keep events happening AND set dates so you won't have to choose between your two favourite activities on the same day!

About me: I'm a 3rd year Mech Eng student, but my passion lies outside of academics. I'm a keen car enthusiast, and I have an affinity towards old stuff, creating, repairing and learning how the things around us work.

Outdoor activities: Being in the bush 🙂

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Instead of studying like I probably should, I spend a lot of my time working on my cars or traveling and spending time with my family.

Advice:

Fac et Spera - Do and Hope.

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Biltong

Strangest thing you've seen outdoors:

Pademelon - WTH even are those things, little fat kangaroo possums.

Raine (he/him) - Safety Officer

Function in the Club: Organising first aid training and workshops, promoting safety culture and looking after the first aid kits, PLBs etc

About me: I am from WA, worked full time for 4 years, enjoyed my quarter life crisis in Asia/North America and just completed a standalone honours in Data Science at UNSW. I've created a racing bar chart of my Facebook data just for fun. I was a debate kid, studied literature part time and love a good animated discussion over a pint at the FLodge.

Outdoor activities: An avid climber who's done a lot of multipitch and trying to trad climb more. Bit of a daytripper, I love getting out to the Blueys just for the afternoon. Famously never canyoned or been caving, but I may have to, to understand the role a little better.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Coding, training or scrolling through the crag. Spending an hour debating the true benefits of Emil Abrahamsson's 10x10 hangboard protocol and Dr Hooper's multiple responses benefits my fingers far more than actually hanging 😉

Biggest fear:

Unclipping the last draw on an overhung route, swinging out and absolutely impaling myself on a tree. I know exactly how to mitigate the situation but my brain does not like it.

Tastiest outdoor snack:

4 Bean mix can, hold the beans, just the liquid.

Favourite bit of kit:

Petzl Dual Connect Adjust. I don't understand why the Trad Dads and Europeans hate it so much. I love having something I trust so much.

Jason (he/him) - Training and Sustainability Officer

Function in the Club: I organise training events and ensure the club is enjoying the outdoors sustainability. Essentially I make sure you have the skills to do wild outdoorsy stuff without hurting yourself or the bush.

About me: Type 2 fun addict that avoids my engineering job like the plague. You'll often find me taking extended lunch breaks to run down Empress Canyon. I love to yap and have a weakness for sweet treats.

Outdoor activities: Far too much canyoning, even more canyoning, and some caving sprinkled in. I'll also go climbing when the water is too cold.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Playing video games, cuddling with my dog Lucy, or planning my next canyoning expedition

Biggest fear:

Getting my hair cut

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Nothing beats an apple which has exploded after you tossed your bag off a cliff

Advice:

Be spontaneous, the best experiences of my life happened because I said "why not"

Callum (he/him) - Events Officer

Function in the Club: Get people involved and having a good time by organising and running events outside of the club trips

About me: I'm a first year studying environmental science - if you couldn't already tell, I love the outdoors! Also into all kinds of other random stuff when I'm not busy being unproductive.

Outdoor activities: Mainly climbing, hiking, and a bit of trail running - and am always keen to try something new

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Playing guitar/bass, photography, hanging out with friends, and trying to read more actual books instead of random Wikipedia pages

Biggest fear:

Tight spaces (sorry caving people!)

Strangest thing you've seen outdoors:

Waking up to a herd of alpine cattle surrounding my tent

Top place on your bucket list:

Yosemite

Noah (he/him) - Events Officer

Function in the Club: Organising all the fun social stuff outside of club trips

About me: I’m a first year civil engineering student who will take any excuse to touch grass instead of studying.

Outdoor activities: I do a lot of hiking and a fair bit of climbing but enjoy any form of outdoor activity.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Trying to join as many clubs and societies as possible (8 so far this year and counting)

Biggest fear:

Breaking my travel buddy’s foot again (it’s happened twice already)

Favourite bit of kit:

Snack

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Himalayan salt lamp (to lick)

Harry (he/him) - Head Gear Officer

Function in the Club: As Head Gear Officer I look after all the helmets……….., nahhh just kidding. I routinely oversee the renting, inspecting, organisation and purchasing of the vast gear collection that the outdoors club has.

About me: My name is Harry, I am a 3rd year Mech-Eng Student. I enjoy a good cup of morning brown, big fan of cycling around on a nice sunny day. Never could say no to a beer and I love custard. I have a car that I regularly spend my life savings fixing. It still doesn't work. I also have a boat that I sink even more money that I don't have into. It's got a hole in it now. Love doing DIY projects and keen on adventure. Chronic procrastinator of uni work but alas aren't we all.

Outdoor activities: I like photosynthesizing, photosynthesizing with a beer, photosynthesizing with multiple beers. I also am an avid caver, climber, hiker and cycler. How good are deep, dark, muddy holes in the ground? so good. You'll catch me doing almost any outdoor activity tho!

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Facebook marketplace is a gateway drug.

Top place on your bucket list:

Sabco Pro Mop Bucket 16 Litre Yellow - $54.99 at Bulk Buys

Advice:

Breakfast beers. It's the secret to life that society is trying to hide from you.

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Milk Arrowroot Biscuits, unparalleled for dryness and fibre.

Sudarshan (he/him) - Web and Social Media Officer

Function in the Club: Work behind the shadows to keep our website and trip signups online (and making sure you can read all of the other amazing exec profiles)!
I also love all the trip reports on the club website and write a bunch too! You will find me frequently asking people to write some more - please message me if you want to write some!!

About me: There's something I have to tell you… Unlike most of the people above, I love the outdoors!?!?! I'm also a third year electrical engineering student who loves collecting random information while procrastinating study.

Outdoor activities: Primarily bushwalking and canyoning (which I discovered through the club!). I also love dabbling in a bit of Caving and Mountain Biking - I will try everything, at least once.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Sleeping or chasing trains - I'm on a quest to visit every train station in Sydney. 129 down, 56 to go - I've probably visited 5 more by the time you're reading this 😀

Biggest fear:

Dying boringly

Top place on your bucket list:

Finding the home of the Wollemi Pine (at a distance)

Tastiest outdoor snack:

Chocolate is the only correct answer (preferably caramel)

Lachlan (he/him) - Arc Delegate

Function in the Club: I am the clubs Arc Delegate, now what does entail you may ask… Well i have some pretty important jobs such as organizing the O-Week stall, laminating paper and errrm trust I'm important I swear.

About me: Im a Mining engineering student who loves to explore and go on epic adventures at every opportunity whether that be canyoning or my daily hill sprints for the train instead of leaving 5 minutes earlier

Outdoor activities: Canyoning, Caving, Climbing, Cross country Skiing and Mountaineering. Pretty much if it's expensive as heck, requires 3 hours of driving and you tell me how much fun it is, I'll be there.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? In-between trying to financially recover from my last trip and fighting for my life in math lectures and my much beloved lizard time in the sun, well that's pretty much the rest of my life lets be real, but I do enjoy volunteering and training with the SES when life allows.

Biggest fear:

My Mum after I forget to tell her I'm still alive after a weekend of adventures

Advice:

"How hard can it be" and "I have a brilliant idea" always lead to the best adventures

Top place on your bucket list:

K2 💪💪(Im not making it past 25)

Brooke (she/her) - Gear Officer

Function in the Club: I'll be hanging out at the gear cupboard, running it occasionally and helping with all of your gear related queries. I'll also be looking for ways to spend our budget on shiny new gear.

About me: I'm an ecology and film production student (3rd year Adv. Sci (Honours)/ Arts) who loves to be outside searching for cool animals and plants. I have way too many hobbies yet am constantly looking for more new things to try.

Outdoor activities: I mainly go white water kayaking and climbing with the club. I also recently went on a caving trip which was a blast and absolutely love to go hiking, snorkelling, surfing and swimming. If there's a tiny bit of sun, you'll catch me at the beach.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? You'll find me watching movies or binging tv shows, reading the occasional dystopian book, rocking up to string ensemble rehearsals and studying (way too much).

Biggest fear:

FOMO

Advice:

Give everything a go

Top place on your bucket list:

Yellowstone National Park

Phoebe (she/her) - Gear Officer

Function in the Club: I have all the gear and no idea so feel free to take it all off my hands & make my pack a little lighter 🙂

About me: I am best described as a budding life-long academic, hiding behind the guise of studying to enable my addiction to outdoor adventures. This time around it's engineering (physics & maths in high school might have been a good idea...in hindsight).

Outdoor activities: Skiing until it's no longer ski season, then some canyoning, 4wding and hiking for swim spots until ski season returns.

What do you get up to when you’re not outdoors? Fixing (and breaking) the car that facilitates my adventures, sometimes knitting in my old age.

Biggest fear:

Straight People

Tastiest Outdoor Snack:

Salted cardboard (no one else will steal it)

Strangest thing you've seen outdoors:

A human skeleton in a house in a cliff in Albania
