This past weekend (22-23 Feb 2025), Leo J and I (Hammy) ran Trial by Fire, a camping trip all about cooking gourmet meals over an open flame—no camp stoves, no shortcuts, just back-to-basics campfire cooking.
We set up at Burralow Creek Campground, a beautiful and peaceful spot with plenty of short hikes to explore. During the day, we kept things simple—making easy meals, playing card games, and just enjoying the outdoors. The real highlight, though, was dinner, where we all came together to cook an extravagant feast over the fire. Between laughs, shared stories, and a little trial and error, we created some seriously impressive meals. We even had a surprise visit from Wilson 🙂
Campfire Feast Highlights
- Capsicum chicken roast, slow-cooked for maximum flavor
- Whole-cooked barramundi roasted over the coals
- Penne pesto pasta with mozzarella balls—rich, creamy, and delicious
- Baked potatoes and corn, because no campfire meal is complete without them
- Camp Popcorn, an interesting (and surprisingly good) experiment
- Perfectly seared pork chops with fire-roasted sides
Cooking over a fire took patience and teamwork, but the results were next-level delicious.
The Experience
Beyond the food, the trip was about slowing down, sharing stories by the fire, and connecting as a group. Whether it was through card games, casual chats, or just appreciating the stillness of nature, we got to know each other in a way that only a camping trip can offer.
Of course, no trip is without its surprises—we had two minor run-ins with leeches. While harmless, they left a bit of a mess and definitely tested a few comfort levels! Just part of the adventure, right?
Looking Ahead
With how much fun this was, we’re definitely keen to run more Trial by Fire trips! If you love great food, great company, and a good excuse to sit around a fire for hours, keep an eye out for the next one.
Big thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a great weekend!
