It was originally scouted in 2024 and the lower section was descended on the same trip. The upper and middle sections of the canyon were not descended. This trip we planned to scout and link the remaining sections and do the first ‘integral’ descent (canyoner speak for descent of all sections).

Margaret Burn is unique as a majority of the canyon flows underground. Boulders have fallen into the canyon, wedged themselves against the walls and created a roof. Over time the forest has grown over the top. You can walk on top of the canyon in several sections. Beneath the roof is a world-class canyon which can only be seen by headtorch.

The canyon is fed by a glacier, meaning its water level can vary depending on season, weather, and even time of day. The heat of the day causes the glacier to melt, changing the water levels from passable, to deadly. To give us the best chance of completing the full descent we would go in April, meaning lower air temperatures and thus lower water levels.

The canyon is split into 3 distinct sections. The upper is an extremely narrow canyon, with twisting walls, extremely high flow, and big waterfalls. This is the only section that is 100% above ground. The middle section flows completely underground. It is best described as a cave rather than a canyon. The fallen rocks create unique hazards that take extreme care and delicate abseiling to traverse. The lower section begins with a 30 metre waterfall and then goes back underground. 80 metre tall walls are capped by the forest above, you walk and swim your way through before emerging into the sunlight, and the junction with the Dart River.

Preparation

All good canyoning stories start in Empress right? I find myself at the change spot, and instead of changing into my usual neoprene, I'm putting on a bright red drysuit. Looking like a power ranger I jump into the first pool. The feeling is odd. I'm completely dry. Margy B is fed by a glacier and melting ice is cold (duh). In these conditions wetsuits just don't cut it, so our team will be using drysuits for warmth. Since I'm the only one who hasn't used one before, a quick empress run was in order to test it out. Confident it works as intended (and doesn't clash with my colour scheme) I head home and finish packing.

Thankfully a similar trip to Taiwan in January meant I already had my packing list written down. I hadn't actually slept, I spent that night in bed going through my mental packing list. I put some clothes on, give my dog Lucy a cuddle and throw myself and my duffles in the car. I meet Madie and Leo and we begin the 2 hour drive from Katoomba to Sydney airport. We board our flight and arrive in Queenstown shortly after. At customs we get the usual interrogation about our tents and canyoning gear (mostly our tents), we pick-up our car and head straight to pack-and-save and do our shopping for the week. Our plan is to spend a total of 5 days scouting the canyon and each night we would return to Daley's Flat Hut. With our supplies for the week we finish packing and head to Paradise ready for an early start the next morning.

DISCLAIMER: The Dart River track from Chinaman's Bluff to Daley's Flat Hut is currently closed due to a landslide, this makes accessing this area very difficult. Your options for the approach as of 2026 are:

a 2-3 day walk (1 way) via the Rees Valley, returning the same way

Helicopter in

It may be possible to walk in from Chinaman's Bluff, climb up and around the landslide and leave a 60 metre rope fixed on the other side for abseiling/ascending; however the track is officially closed.

Day 1

We arrived at Daley's Flat hut just past 1pm. We have a quick lunch, leave our overnight gear at the hut and begin to scout the canyon. We use “Daley’s 3 wire bridge” to cross the Dart River and then head upstream to where Margy B joins the Dart. A torrent of grey coloured water roared out, the sound alone was enough to put us on edge. We try to use the reference rock to compare the flow to the 2024 trip but we cannot match the photos. Something seemed to have changed in the past 2 years. Despite the seemingly high flow we decide to walk to the lower section and begin scouting.

We enter the canyon by walking down a landslide on canyon right. We poke our heads down some holes and crawl through some tight passages to try and find a way down to the water. We can hear the water roaring below us but cannot find a human-sized passage. We try to enter where the water emerges from underground but find it exiting via several large siphons which are obviously impassable to people. We use this as an opportunity to look down into the lower section to assess the water levels and check if the bolts are still there. We carefully hop from boulder to boulder, and to the pitch edge, carefully avoiding the 3° water. We discover the anchor still intact, and the abseil looks possible despite the seemingly high water levels.

With daylight running out we ascend the ropes and leave our canyoning gear on the spur. This will save us carrying it up tomorrow. We reverse our entry track and make it back to the hut with time to spare. We watch the sunset while eating dinner and making our plans for the next day.

Leo looks down the pitch in the lower section - Jason Brand

Madie and Leo cross "Daley's 3 Wire Bridge" - Jason Brand

Day 2

At 6am I get woken up by Madie's headtorch shining in my eyes, after our Taiwan expedition in January I'm used to this treatment. I have a quick breakfast of oats (yuck) and coffee and we start our walk by headtorch. We pick-up our gear on the spur and continue up to the end of the middle section of the canyon. Since the middle section flows totally underground we need to scout the entire section and ensure we can safely enter and exit before we commit to a through-trip.

We spend some time exploring and find an entrance to the water. Excited, I grab my headtorch and start making my way upstream. I carefully climb and stem above the raging water, one slip and I could fall in and be pulled into a deadly sieve. I eventually reach a waterfall which I couldn't climb around. I show the others and we contemplate aid climbing up to explore further but we think it's better to try and explore top down. We turn around and make our way up to the middle of the middle section.

Here there is a hole in the roof that allows us to access the water. We abseil down 2 short pitches and put our drysuits on. We then abseil down a 20 metre pitch and start exploring downstream. Since we had drysuits on we could enter the water, but not knowing if the canyon connected we had to make sure we could reverse any obstacles we came across.

Eventually we find a ~10m waterfall where the canyon takes a sharp left turn. It seemed like the same waterfall we came across when scouting from the bottom but we weren't sure. Leo attempts to abseil on CR but wasn't able to find a ledge or way across. He comes up and we use the roof of the cave to climb along the left hand wall and then abseil to a small ledge. It was the section we had discovered earlier! The prospects of a complete descent were high, so we reversed back through the canyon and explored upstream.

We use a series of ledges high above the water to avoid some deadly sieves, occasionally hopping between each side of the narrow canyon. We rope up for a short climb up a ramp on CR, as we reach the top we find a waterfall we couldn't pass. We reverse our steps and ascend the 20m pitch towards daylight. As we change out of our drysuits we discover glow worms on the roof above us. We ascend the last 2 pitches and find a comfy spot on one of the boulders that forms the roof of the canyon. We lay on the thick moss and enjoy views of Mt Earnslaw while we eat lunch.

We walk along the roof of the canyon and abseil to the start of the middle section where the full flow of the canyon disappears underground, we get back into drysuits and abseil into the darkness. Some careful swinging and stemming allows you to avoid the raging waterfalls, we needed to avoid the water as we would have to ascend back up our abseil lines. Most of the abseils involved climbing or traversing to avoid the flow. Eventually we abseiled down a small ramp on CR; the same one we climbed earlier! We had found the last piece of the puzzle, the middle section connected and a through-trip was feasible.

We start ascending back up to the surface. As I near the top of one of the pitches I looked up and saw the “pulse” (a type of removable bolt) my rope was attached to was 70% out of the rock. I instantly suck my body to the wall to keep the outwards force on the bolt minimal. While the pulse was backed up, if it was to fail I would take a swing into the flow, a fate perhaps just as bad as falling onto the ground below. My best plan of action was to take 1 more step up and get my hands onto the rock feature above me. I gently take a step up on my ascenders and throw my hands onto the ledge to my left. I then get my leg up and mantle to safety. I signal to the others to pass the drill. I place a new anchor for the other 2 and we continue back to the surface.

We drop our gear on our entry track and start walking back. We hear a loud “KEEEEE-AAAA” from the trees. A curious kea follows us down the hill, but places some stress into the back of our minds. Kea's are intelligent and curious birds, which are renowned for destroying tents and other gear. I yell up into the trees, “don't touch our drysuits or I'll be making KFK tomorrow”. We continue down and make it back to the hut after sunset. Despite such a big breakthrough in the canyon there wasn't much conversation over dinner, after 12 ½ hours moving we didn't have any energy left for anything but breathing and eating. We all decided after such a big effort we deserved a sleep-in. With alarms set for 7am we get to bed.

Day 3

After 3 days of early rises a small sleep in was a blessing. Starting the day without headlamps is always a good feeling. We push up the hill and are once again greeted by our feathered friend. Thankfully our gear is intact, so we continue up to the last piece of the puzzle, the upper section. We entered down a landslide on CR and onto an “island” of forest above the canyon. We abseil to the water and get changed.

To access the first waterfall we place a bolt on CL and use it as a traverse line to look over the pitch. I make my way over to the belay and watch Leo abseil down, trying his best to avoid the flow. With some moves reminiscent of a figure skater, he makes it to a sloping ramp on CR and towards the edge of the next tier of waterfall. Eventually he started ascending back up to me, he found that the water was too powerful to continue straight down and the walls became overhanging which made it impossible to progress horizontally. We would have to change our approach. We make our way back to the island above the canyon and scout from the top.

We abseiled in from the rim of the canyon (actually Madie and Leo did while I napped) and Madie discovered a ledge just above the first abseil, if we were able to get there we could traverse above the deadly flow. They spent the next few hours scouting a route through while I napped, snacked, and swatted at sandflies. Eventually they appeared back up top with smiles on their faces, the upper section goes, and we are all set for the “integral” descent tomorrow. We leave our gear at the start point and walk down the hill for the last time.

<div class="wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8f761849 Touching the vertical flow meant you would have your drysuit forcefully removed from your body and touching the horizontal water meant getting flushed into one of the many siphons and sieves on the canyon floor. We essentially played “the water is lava” for this entire section. After roughly 100m of traverses we descended to the water level towards the end of the upper section and had some delicate climbing around some white water before the walls opened up and the water disappeared underground signaling the start of the middle section.

Canyon walls open at the bottom of the upper section

We don our headlamps, have some snacks, and head underground. In this section we avoid the waterfalls by carefully abseiling, swinging over the flow to small rock platforms. Some sections require lead climbing to set traverse lines, and in other parts we climbed on boulders wedged high in the ceiling to avoid a siphon or sieve. Occasionally we would wade through raging rapids, being careful to not get flushed down the next waterfall. This section is one of the most unique canyons I've descended, it combines the challenges of caving and aquatic canyoning to create an experience that's one of a kind.

The water disappears into an impassable siphon, and we exit the cave. From here we walk along the roof of the canyon, where a forest has grown above. If you didn't hear the occasional roar of water below the ground you would never know about the canyon below. A couple of short abseils through the forest and we were at the start of the lower section.

We noticed that the water level had decreased over the last few days, and looked lower than the 2024 descent. We looked down the 30 metre pitch and we saw a route down. We thread the rope and deploy a “water anchor” to create a “zipline” to avoid the waterflow. This technique relies on fast currents, so we try to place it in a “funnel” where the flow is concentrated into a single point. Leo goes first, clipping into the zipline, as watch him go down the water anchor slowly pulls out of its funnel and Leo disappears into the waterfall. A few seconds later the abseil rope goes slack but there is no sign of Leo. Unsure if he is ok I go down, opting to leave the zipline unclipped. As I descend I feel Leo tug twice on the rope, signaling he is ok. I relay the information up to Madie and continue down.

.kb-gallery-id-20740_1a5160-03.kb-gallery-ul.kb-gallery-type-fluidcarousel .kt-blocks-carousel figure find ourselves in an overhang behind the curtain of water, we need to cross to the other side but the waterflow is STRONG, so we look around for the best path through. Eventually I get sick of this and run at full speed through the waterfall, trying my best to not get knocked over by the current. Leo follows, bringing the tail of the rope with him. To avoid Madie doing the same we set up a bolted anchor for a zipline. Madie abseils down and we are all reunited (and cold). This day was unplanned, meaning we had to ration our food and entertain ourselves. We read every book, magazine, and poster in the hut, unfourtunetly no reception meant I couldn't catchup on my doom-scrolling. Instead we cleaned, practiced knots, and rested. Madie got hut-fever within 3 hours and went for a walk while Leo and I slept. If your team is capable it is well worth the effort. It is unique, and unlike any canyon I have descended before. We agreed on a grade of V6A6VI****. This canyon requires aid climbing, multipoint traverse lines, and crossing extreme vertical flow. The water has extreme force, and entering it could be deadly, you must take extreme care to avoid the siphons and strainers. Due to the remoteness, and the fact it goes underground it requires a high level of commitment, and escaping flood maybe impossible. External rescue would be extremely problematic, or potentially impossible. The canyon itself is of world-class quality, and is one of the best I've ever descended.

More information and beta is available on kiwicanyons.org

Thank you UNSWOC for providing a Beanie Grant for this trip.

Thanks to the sponsors of our NZ Exped
CE4Y: https://www.canyoning-equipment.com/
CanyonZone: https://www.canyonzone.com/
Tebylon Canyoing Equipment: https://tebylon.com/

Happy canyoning 😀

PS.
For those with low attention span, this trip report is available in Instagram reel format:
Upper Section
Middle Section Part 1
Middle Section Part 2
Lower Section

Margaret Burn V6A6VI**** Expedition – South Island, New Zealand31/3/26 – 5/4/26Team: Leo Garnache, Madie Garnache, Jason BrandPhotos: Madie Garnache Disclaimer … Read More

[128,73,4

post-20740","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-beanie-grant","category-canyoning","category-trip-report
["GET
