Trigonometrical stations, commonly referred to as trigs, are fixed survey points placed at the highest peak of a mountain or hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trig bagging is the challenge of hiking to, and checking off trig stations<\/a>, whatever be the terrain to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I personally have not engaged in this activity but I am National-Park-bagging and I haven\u2019t been to Popran National Park yet. Popran NP has one singular trig station, which is on a fire trail. This is cheating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore we instead went to the next closest one \u2013 TS877 Berowra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The walk started off at an unexpected gate! Freshly laid asphalt greeted us, before getting stuck into the more traditional fire trail.<\/p>\n\n\n

We turned off towards our desired ridge after 2km of this warmup and made our way south towards our goal. This started off with some fairly straightforward and relatively open ridge walking.<\/p>\n\n\n

My paper map made its entrance and the terrain got slightly more interesting as we made our way to the saddle, weaving our way up and over rocks. A lovely chalk arrow marked our turnoff at one point, but no other trail markers were seen in this section.<\/p>\n\n\n

The final third was the most interesting, as we had to make our way across hill one, to reach the trig station. Our track notes<\/a> suggested a traverse around the eastern side due to the steep and rockiness presented on this hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stopped for a nice break in a natural arch while contemplating the possible route, but to our amazement there was a way to chimney up through the arch and onto the top of the hill!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final stretch was on the rocky tops between the two peaks, and there were multiple cases of \"ooh cool rock, lets climb that\" along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We finally found ourselves at the (ex-)trig marker, presented with absolutely stunning views over the Hawkesbury River and even as far as Barrenjoey Lighthouse to the East and Gosford to the North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunch was had and we enjoyed the view before making our way back the way we came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The funniest thing about offtrack walking is re-starting after stopping for a break. Usually the \"alright lets keep going<\/em>\" is followed with some movement. Except here we had several cases of \"alright lets\u2026 uh\u2026 *checks compass* yeah ok this way<\/em>\" \ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n\n\n

Challenge: find the way<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Due to winter daylight constraints, we couldn't make our way to Cascade Gully Dam and the HMAS Parramatta shipwreck as originally hoped for. We did however make it about 500m along the ridge in that direction and encountered a cairn or two along the way. This easterly ridge was scrubbier than our main route, but was still traversable without difficulty - and maybe another trip is in order for the future \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all a fun walk with some stunning views at the end!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our total time from car to car was 6 hours and 15 minutes, including lunch. A GPS trace of our route is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
