The author and club accept no responsibility for the actions of those relying on the information herein. Outdoors activities are undertaken at an individual\u2019s own risk. These pages contain general tips and advice. Use it as a guide to know what is advisable to have with you and what you should learn from appropriate courses and experienced leaders.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trip leading is a great way to get more involved and give back to the Club, and comes with its own perks such as subsidised skills and <a href=\"https:\/\/unswoc.org\/wordpress\/safety\/remote-area-first-aid\/\">first aid training<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you're think about becoming a trip leader, talk to an exec or a current trip leader! We're always happy to help new members develop their skills and start leading trips. All new trip leaders lead a few trips assisting a more experienced trip leader, before heading into the big wide world by yourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a generic (incomplete) list of things you should always think about when running any club trip. Consult exec members if you are unsure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a minimum of <\/span><b>two trip leaders on each trip.&nbsp;<\/b>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least <\/span>one trip leader on each trip should be<b> first aid certified.<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canyons and trips that will be out of phone reception must have a <strong>remote first aid certified<\/strong> leader.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decide on the details of your trip:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where? <\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lead trips that<b> you have undertaken before<\/b>, unless you are highly experienced. <em>(You must tell your emergency contact if you are leading a trip to somewhere you haven\u2019t been to)<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check for any closures within the area you are heading to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When?<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duration? <\/span>Check sunset time and leave earlier than you think.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trip Level <em>(Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced)<\/em>?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capacity? <\/span><b>Know max numbers and stick to them.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a class=\"anchor\" name=\"emergency-contact\"><\/a>Let an <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ff0000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">emergency contact<\/mark><\/strong> know the details of your plans -<b> please take this seriously.<\/b>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Let a <strong>reliable person<\/strong><em> <\/em><em>(ideally a fellow trip leader who knows the area, knows you well AND is not on a trip that day!) <\/em>know:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where you are going (route and side trips).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where you plan to start, stop and camp.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you expect to start, when you expect to be back\/check in by, and most importantly, <strong>at what time they should send for help<\/strong> if they haven't heard from you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How many people are going <em>(they all must sign up for the trip on the website).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rego of the car you (the trip leader) intend to travel in where will it be parked (if different from start location).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/303896476425225\/permalink\/1698413233640202\/\">There is a good discussion between trip leaders here<\/a> regarding what your emergency contact should know and when to call emergency services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The more you tell your emergency contact, the safer you will be and the less likely they will be to worry unnecessarily.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/unswoc.org\/wordpress\/safety\/trip-leading-101\/posting-a-trip-on-the-website\/\">Post your trip on the website<\/a><em>(link only available to current trip leaders)<\/em>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Then post a link to your event on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/UNSWOutdoorsClub\/\">facebook page<\/a> with a short snazzy description to get people keen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember to <a href=\"https:\/\/unswoc.org\/wordpress\/safety\/trip-leading-101\/posting-a-trip-on-the-website\/#featured-image\">set the featured image<\/a>, so your post looks good on facebook.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/unswoc.org\/wordpress\/safety\/trip-leading-101\/managing-bookings\/\">Select participants<\/a><em>(link only available to current trip leaders)<\/em>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure that participants have the <\/span><b>requisite skills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your trip. Ask <\/span><b>what trips have they been <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to before.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experience stacking: Mix up the experience of participants.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attempt to <\/span><b>balance the ratio of male\/female<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> participants.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure you have <\/span><b>enough drivers\/cars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the trip, if necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember to <strong>sign up for your own trip!<\/strong> This is necessary for you to be covered by the Club's insurance should anything go wrong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get in touch with your trip participants:<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Send out your phone number or use Facebook Messenger to create a contact pathway.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let everyone know what gear is required, whether you will collect it or if they must do so.<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>1 Emergency Blanket per person <\/b>is compulsory for all canyons and any trip where you may get stuck out in the cold <em>(multipitching, backcountry, etc.)<\/em>. Emergency blankets are available for purchase at gear cupboard for $5.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out what gear each person already owns.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware of medical conditions of participants and remind them to take their personal meds with them.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a <\/span><b>clear meeting point and time. Be friendly!<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the trip participants if they have any medical issues that you need to know about.&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trip leaders should be conscious that this advice may not want to be given in a group setting, so ask at the beginning of the trip but <\/span><b>give people the opportunity to come up to you when they feel comfortable.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trip leaders should inquire about the following:<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical histories that may be relevant for a club trip <em>(e.g. asthma, etc.)<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locations of medications, especially for anaphylaxis.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether participants may be fasting for any reason <em>(e.g. during Ramadan)<\/em>, as the reduced food and water intake could impact their health on the trip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advise everyone as to the location of your first aid kit and PLB <em>(e.g. it's in the top of my red pack)<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trip leaders should make it clear that you are there to care for the participant\u2019s safety and wellbeing for the duration of the trip, and that they can, and should, come to you with any potential safety concerns, <\/span><b>no matter how minor.<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remind people that the activities that we undertake are inherently dangerous and they should always be on alert and listen to instructions.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double check all participants have appropriate gear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where applicable ask participants to use the amenities before entering a crag or canyon.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that people come from different backgrounds and may have different communication styles and social expectations.
