Climbing at the Ledge - Important notice

We sign up a whole lot of new members and give them instruction on how to use safety gear properly when they first come to the Ledge. As you may guess, this is a time consuming process, especially more so for those of us that do it and are not paid. So we are enforcing the rules that we put into effect last year. (This is mainly for those of you who are bringing new members to be signed up) New members will only be signed up in the hour between 6:30 and 7:30pm. If they come before then, they will have to wait and if they come afterwards, then they will have to pay the normal entry fee to climb that night.

For people that cannot make it to the Ledge at that time, then they can either join up at Club Meetings or send an email to one of the executive to arrange a time.

Sale Night

Our sponsor, Mountain Designs is having a sale for clubs on Tuesday, the 21st May. Between 9am and 9pm on this day, BMC members will receive 20% off on all non-sale items that are currently in stock. For those that don't know, Mountain Designs is located on Kent St in the City (behind Town Hall). Club members receive 12.5% off all year, upon presentation of their membership card. There are usually two sale nights wach year, so don't miss out.

Note that you will need your membership card to receive a discount. There have been some issues with membership cards for renewing members (Those of you who were members in previous years) where our database did not print out membership cards for some people. If you are a renewed member and did not find your card at the last meeting, then email Marc and we can make sure you get yours in the next print run. Also email Marc if you have not yet picked up your membership card, and need it for the sale.

Arrow 24 Hour Adventure Race

Fellow BMCers, we need your help!!

We have a team of keen and fit BMC members going for the Arrow 24 hrs adventure race. The team members will represent the club in a 24hrs non-stop multi sport race to be held in Sydney on the weekend of the 22-23 June 2002.

Your fellow racers are:

  • Tom Sobey
  • Karl Umlauff
  • Simon Angus
  • Martin Hing
  • Chris Lum
  • Adam Barne
  • Jan Janmaat
  • Hudson Doyle
  • Mike Doran

The guys will complete event legs in mountain biking, kayaking, trekking and cross-country navigation.

One of the race rules is to have support crews stationed at every transition point of the race to give a hand with equipment transfer, food, etc for the racing team. And this is where we need your help!...we need volunteers to form support crew teams at every transition point. These support crew teams need to remain and camp at the transition points for the duration of the race....so if you have exams the following week, bring a hammock and your books and study in the bush (I will)....what a way to avoid distractions such as TVs at home ;-)

So far I have two volunteers happy to help as suport crew members: Dave Healy and Mark Balawender, but we still need far more people to come and help and cheer your fellow BMCers!...please contact me with your name, address, email and phone numbers if you're game.

Check out www.24houradventurerace.com for further details on the RACE!

Cheers and many thanks.

Australian Rogaining Champs Results

Check out www.act.rogaine.asn.au/Results/02OzChamps.html for the full results. This was a big event - 195 teams finished, and many competitors were very serious. I don't currently have a list of the teams who entered, so some may not be shown below - my apologies. Also, I'm trying to track down how we went in the inter-university competition. I will update this ASAP.

Ben Cirulis, Ben Shanahan 1390 points 78th overall 46th open mens
Adrian Smith, Mike Devey, Roland Thomas 1140 points 111th overall 60th open mens
Said Hralja, Martin Bastian 1020 points 125th overall 66th open mens

Boree Log

Despite some rain late Saturday and on Sunday, the Boree Log was a great success. About 70 people made it down. We now know that the rangers are okay with this number of people so we won't have to 'miscalculate' our estimate in the future (we told them 25 people would be there!!). There was canyoning, caving, walking, swimming, climbing and lots of drinking! If anyone wants to write a full trip report, that would be great. Anyway, here are a few photos from the one of the canyoning trips down Jarrara Creek.

Trips List

Look out for a bunch of trips after (and during!) the exams. The snow season should be starting then too, so expect some snow touring trips.

Friday, 17 May 2002 - Sunday, 19 May 2002 Bushwalking - Wild Dog Mountains
Leaving late Friday night, we will start early the next morning from the car park on Narrowneck peninsula. The intended route will involve a bit of peak bagging in the Wild Dogs, with some great views, camping on the banks of the Cox River that night. On Sunday we will explore a canyon or two, swim in the creek if its still warm (so bring ya cossies), and then hike back to the car. This walk is not amazingly difficult. If you are resonably fit and have done some walking before, then you will probably enjoy it a lot as it has some awesome views, deep canyons and one beautiful river.

Saturday, 18 May 2002 - Sunday, 19 May 2002 Bushwalk - Explorers Wall
I'm planning a day walk down Explorers Walls on either saturday or sunday this weekend (north of the Grose Gorge). The day can be decided upon according to what suits people. The plan is to start at the Mt Banks picnic area, follow Explorers Range along to Mt Strzelecki, then cross Explorers Brook, and return to the picnic area via Carmarthen Ridge. The walk will require a moderate level of fitness, with a 400m descent and ascent required to cross Explorers Brook.

I know this is a while away but I have started planning a cycling tour of New Zealand for February or March next year. If you would like to be emailed a copy of the plan I have written for both the north and south island (probably only taking in one of these), then please email.
