Newsletter - May 2001

News

This is a really short newsletter, really just the latest trips list (which is looking a little small, but will be much larger next Tuesday, hopefully), and a story from Carolina Roman about another ex-member who's gone on to bigger and better things! Good luck to everyone in the upcoming exams, and hope to see you at the June club meeting, during Stuvac, or sometime throughout the winter holidays, out there! (Oh - and I know it's not really May anymore -- but as there'll be another newsletter next week, I can't exactly call this one the June newsletter, can I?)

Postcard from Europe

Hi Everyone !!!

Carolina here, to let you know of some exciting news I just received from Kathmandu. Last Saturday the 12th at around 14:00 local time in Nepal, our long-lost shy and quiet BMC friend, Andres Stambuk, 'roared loudly' with excitement from the summit of Makalu in the nepalese Himalayas at over 8,000 metres (and without oxygen!)...not sure exactly how high over 8,000 Makalu is, but it is the 5th highest in the world!

Andres was briefly a BMC member back in semester 1 of 1999, as an exchange> student from his native Chile. Most of you would remember Andres as a very shy guy, making quiet appearances at our meetings, yet dazzled us all with a cool slide show of his mountaineering deeds in the southern Andes, as a 'good-bye' gesture before leaving us. He increasingly became quite active with the BMC, starting from when he was determined to find out what rogaining was all about...he teamed up with our 'friendly giant' and fellow rogaine first-timer, none other than our most favourite "Austrian" Roland Dusek (also former BMC member), at the BMC's first ever hosted> Rogaine...what a treat :-) ...(by the way, Roland has gotten so good at the sport now, he recently won an orienteering event as part of championships> held in Vienna....well done!).

Another memorable Andres event, was our trip to 'Booroomba Rocks' in the ACT, in May(?) 1999....the pictures are still up in the BMC website, I think...the classic 'Andres' picture, where he's climbing a face carrying what looks to ba heavy rack of gear....very impressive...but on close inspection, the 'heavy gear' turns out to be lots of pairs of walking boots and sandals from us all who were too forgetful to carry our own pairs to the top ;-))))....anyway, cool event...not only did we take ages finding the place (ok ok...not 'we', 'me') , but were also entertained with Roland's 'swedish cup' and impressed with Andres 'only-canned-sardines' diet.....

Anyway, sort of drifting from the topic a bit.......yes, so Andres was the first to summit, from a seven-member Chilean expedition, they're aparently the first Chileans to reach the summit of this mountain....so Andres is pretty proud and the media has started to familiarise his name back in his home country....you can see pictures from the trip here: http://www.makalu.cl/galeria_reporte.htm (the site is mostly in> Spanish)....you'll recognise Andres, the guy in the first picture far left.

So there's the news....I had been in contact with Andres a few times, last> time sent me a mail 2 months ago from Kathmandu....and he mentioned to> please pass on his greetings to the ones he met at the BMC....and here I do so, choosing a pretty cool time for it ;-)

Next week, Roland and I meet to climb in Italy!...and I guess 'mountaineering' 'summitting' 'climbing' 'Nepal' etc....will be often-mentioned topics ;-) I look forward to seeing you when I get back, all the best for now and take care...

Carolina Roman.
