UNSW Bushwalking & Mountaineering Club

Newsletter - May 2000

Introduction

Well we are (or actually you are) now about halfway through the first session, and we've finally got the membership card situation sorted out, yay! Thanks to all those who helped with putting them together, and getting them out to all the members. Sorry for the delay to those who have been patiently awaiting their cards so they can get the various discounts afforded by them. If you haven't received a card, then let us know. We may have missed it, or more likely we can't read all the details you provided when joining the club.

If you haven't already been on one of our trips, maybe you should start considering it. Time seems to slip away so quickly as you go through the University year, and all of a sudden, another year has past, and you haven't been on any trips. There are a number of single day trips being run this month, which are particularily suitable if you really can't spare an entire weekend away from your studies.

Innes Sale

Innes Bicycles is currently offering special prices on all Canondale, Giant and Merida bicycles until June 30 or while stocks last. The prices offered are lower the post-GST which will be lower then current recommended retail. As an added bonus club members will get 15% discount on any accessories purchased with a bicycle. Drop in to Innes to have a look at 222 Clarence St in the city (near Town Hall) or call 9264 9597.

Lunchtime Bouldering

We are trying out a new idea, bouldering in Queens Park and at other areas near university over an afternoon. Bouldering is a minimalist form of rock climbing, done at small heights above the ground (usually less than 2-3 meters), often as practise for normal rock climbing. As it is so close to the ground, no special equipment is needed, although climbing shoes can be useful.

We will be meeting just before 1pm on Thursdays, at the 359 bus stop on Botany Street, Upper Campus. Contact Andrew Wong (bmc_ccw@excite.com), or Andrew Collins (acollins@climb.wow.aust.com) for more information.

Trips List

Sunday 14 May Mountain Biking - Cafe Crawl
For all those people out there who would like an easy cruise around Sydney, taking in some pockets of bush, and some cafes. We'll start near St Leonards station, a short train ride from the city. Eventually we may end up out at Manly, but it really depends upon how keen people are. There are numerous bailout options along the way, so if you can't make it the whole way, you can make it for at least part of the trip. This will be suitable for beginners, and even vaguely dodgy bikes.
Daniel Marlay, 9969 9167 danielm@multinet.com.au
Saturday 20 May or Sunday 21 May Rock Climbing - Mt Hay
An impressive climb up one of the fantastic cliffs in the Grose Valley. A challenging outdoors climb that will be suitable for a small group of experienced climbers.
Scott Morrison, 9349 1522
Saturday 27 May - Sunday 28 May Bushwalking - Blue Mountains
A bushwalk in the Blue Mountains, suitable for beginners. This trip is likely to be slightly exploratory, but should be a lot of fun.

Sunday 28 May Bushwalking - Pantoney's Crown
A moderate difficulty long daywalk with some rock scrambling. Pantoney's Crown is located at the head of the Wolgan Valley and offers extensive views of this fantastic area.

Friday 26 May, 12:30pm - 2:00pm BBQ - UniBar
Another BMC barbeque which will be a great way to meet some of the other members of the club, and catch up with those you already know.
Andrew Wong
Friday 26 May, 5:30pm, Hyde Park Fountain Critical Mass - cycling protest and fun ride
Critical Mass is a monthly ride which aims to achieve increased awareness of cycling as a valid means of transport. It's also damn good fun. If the idea of having the road to yourself, and 200-300 other like minded cyclists appeals, then come along to this great event.
Peter Kirievsky, pkir@cse.unsw.edu.au
Saturday 3 June Sunday 4 June Mountain Biking - Wollemi National Park
A cycle touring trip into the Wollemi National Park with some exploring to be done as well. Bikes offer an ideal way of accessing some of the areas of this extensive and very beautiful park.

5 June - 28 August Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle

A half day ride suitable for beginners around the Kuringae Chase National Park, just north of Sydney.
Peter Kirievsky, pkir@cse.unsw.edu.au
Tuesday 13 June, 7:00pm Roundhouse June Club Meeting

Daniel Marlay, 9969-9167 (h), 9433-5332 (w), daniel.marlay@multinet.com.au
Saturday 24 June - Sunday 25 June XC Skiing - Leather Barrel Creek
An intermediate level backcountry trip to start off the ski season. This trip will involve a fairly short traverse from the top of Thredbo to the head of Leather Barrel Creek, and then extensive skiing in Leather Barrel and the surrounding areas. Suitable for people with no previous snow camping experience. XC skiing experience is not required, but preferrably some previous downhill skiing experience. Snowboarding may be accomodated (maybe :-)).
Daniel Marlay, 9969-9167 (h), 9433-5332 (w), daniel.marlay@multinet.com.au
Saturday 1 July - Sunday 2 July Nav Sheild 2000
This is the annual navigation event held between the various rescue services in the state, and other competitive individuals. Similar to a rogaine, but with more gear required to be carried, and a slightly different focus.
Simon Angus, s.angus@student.unsw.edu.au
Saturday 15 July - Sunday 16 July

Australian Rogaining Championships
Held a few hours drive north of Sydney this year, this will also be the intervarsity rogaining competition. Despite the championship format, this event is still suitable for beginners, and guarantees a well set, well thought out course. There will be good competition at the higher levels for the more competitively inclined.
