UNSW Bushwalking and Mountaineering Club

Newsletter - November 1999

Holidays

Once again, it is that time of year, and holidays are upon us yet again. What does it mean? Well lots of exams, then lots of parties and no more Bushwalking and Mountaineering Club meetings for a few months. This doesn't mean that we won't be doing things, just that we won't be meeting in at the University each month.

You can find out what is happening with the club over the holidays in a number of ways:

  1. Look at the trips list in this newsletter.
  2. Check the trips list on our homepage ( http://unswbmc.homepage.com/admin/trips.html).
  3. Join the one of the e-mail lists, at http://unswbmc.homepage.com/admin/maillist.html.
  4. Contact me, Daniel Marlay, at 9433-5332 (w) or 9969-9167 (h).

Membership Renewal

Club membership is valid for a calendar year, and so you will need to renew your membership at the beginning of session next year. The easiest way to do this is to turn up to our O-week or week 1 stall, or come along to our first club meeting for the year on Tueasday 14th March 2000, in the Squarehouse. Alternatively, you can contact Joanna Leake at joanna_leake@hotmail.com to arrange a suitable time.

Feedback

Remember that you, the members, are the people who make this club what it is. We run a lot of trips during the year, and we think we get a lot of things right, but we realise that there are many things we could do better. What do you think of the Club? Did you go on any club trips this year? If not, why not, and what should we change to make the trips more appealing to you? Would you like to help run club trips? What would help you to do so? If you have answers or comments, let me (Daniel Marlay, 9969-9167 (h), 9433-5332 (w), danielm@multinet.com.au) or another executive know, so that we can make this club better for you.

Trips List

When What Contact
Tuesday 16 November or Wednesday 17 November Canyoning - Claustral
The classic Blue Mountains Canyon. Do it mid week to avoid the usual throngs of people, and experience the "Black Hole of Calcutta". Wetsuits required
Owain Williams, owain_williams@bigfoot.com
Thursday 18 November Canyoning - Rocky Creek
A great canyon for beginners, with no rope skills neccessary. It is quite cold so you will need a wetsuit, however.
Owain Williams, owain_williams@bigfoot.com
Saturday 20 November Mountain Biking - Mt York
A great area of single track for intermediate and advanced mountain bikers. A great way to relax and get ready for the exams in the following week
Owain Williams, owain_williams@bigfoot.com
Sunday 21 November Bushwalking - Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park
max. 6 people
We'll take the train to Mt Colah station, walk from there into Ku-Ring-Gai Chase down to Appletree Bay. From there we'll do a short side trip to a "secret" water fall off the main track. Nice swimming there. We'll make our way to Mt Ku-Ring-Gai station and from there back to Sydney. I expect this walk to take up all of the day, so we'll have to leave early in the morning. Level: medium, suits beginners
Jane Brennan, jbrennan@cse.unsw.edu.au
Saturday 27 November - Sunday 5 November Rock Climbing - Mt Arapiles
Suitable for independant climbers, i.e. those with their own gear and who are happy to go off climbing with one or two other people. Mt Arapiles is located near Australia's premier milkshake shop, and also happens to have great climbing.
Mic Rofe, microfe@hotmail.com
Sunday 28 November Bushwalking and Cycling- Blue Mountains, Glenbrook Area
max. 6 people
We'll take the train to Glenbrook station and will bicycle from there to the Park entrance. There we'll lock our bicycles and walk along the Red Hand trail. After that, we will bicycle the Oakes Fire trail to some very nice lookouts over the Nepean River. We have three spare mountain bikes and two spare helmets, as long as you pick them up and return them to Eastwood within a day or two of the walk. So, don't let not having a bicycle be the reason not to come along. Level: easy, suits beginners
Jane Brennan, jbrennan@cse.unsw.edu.au
Tuesday 30 November - 6:30 pm End of academic year celebration
A picnic down at Balmoral beach, with swimming, games, fish and chips, and all the other goodies associated with summer. Contact Daniel and let him know if you intend to come along.
Daniel Marlay, 9969-9167 (h), 9433-5332 (w), danielm@multinet.com.au
Saturday 4 December Mountain Biking - Lane Cove
Peter will be taking a final training ride for those who would like to do a little preparation for the competition the following week. You can come along even if you aren't competing.
Peter Kirievsky, pkir@cse.unsw.edu.au
Monday 6 December - Sunday 12 December Australian Universities Mountain Biking Competition
This will be held in the Megalong valley near the Blue Mountains, about 2 hours out of Sydney. The organisers are promising lots of activities like horse riding, abseiling, other stuff, more other stuff and even more exciting other stuff, oh and of course plenty of really cool mountain bike racing. Definitely a great way to get into holiday mode and meet people from other universities.
Peter Kirievsky, pkir@cse.unsw.edu.au
Monday 13 December - Tuesday 14 December Note the new changed date SnowPlay Bushwalk
A walk along the fantastic Main Range of the Snowy Mountains. We'll travel at a comfortable pace, with plenty of time for stopping off and sliding down what snow there is left on the mountains. The current plan is to take in Charlotte's Pass, Blue Lake, Mt Sentinel, Carruthers peak, Mt Lee, Mt Northcott, Mt Clark, Club Lake and the Kunama Hut ruins. No previous snow experience neccessary (it's a bushwalk). Great for relaxing after exams or commiserating the end of yet another ski season.
Daniel Marlay, danielm@multinet.com.au
Mid December Bushwalking - Coastal walk in the Royal National Park
A loop walk which will take in some of the beauty of Australia's oldest national park.
James Southwell, 9460 8834, u2193296@student.mech.unsw.edu.au
Between 24 December 1999 - 1 January 2000 for 3-5 days Mountain biking - Snowy Mountains
Should be an absolutely fabulous time to be out biking. Lovely cool rivers, beautiful mountains and wild flowers, quaint old huts, menacing marhc flies .... oops. Seriously this should be one really great biking trip
James Southwell, 9460 8834, u2193296@student.mech.unsw.edu.au
3 January 2000 - 7 January 2000 Rock Climbing - Mt Buffalo
Mt Buffalo has some of the best big wall climbing in Australia (some would say the only big wall climbing in Australia). This trip is suitable for intermediate climbers and up, but if you are a keen beginner, have a chat with Ben to see if you can come along.
Ben Cirulis, bc@student.unsw.edu.au
Sunday 9 January Mountain Biking - Royal National Park
A repeat of the trip I run on Septamber 19. A day trip down to the Royal National Park, for some of the finest mountain biking close to Sydney. There will be a lunch time bail out point for those who don't wish to take the steep climb to access the beaches in the afternoon.
Peter Kirievsky, danielm@multinet.com.au
Late January - Early February 2000 MTB Touring - Tasmanian offroad trail
A trail established by the Australian Audax people, which traverses Tasmania from Devonport down to Hobart, mainly on dirt. The trip will probably take 10 -14 days, covering some 60 km a day (approx). Not suitable for people with no MTB experience, but you can probably get away with no touring experience. contact Ken for more details.
Ken Wilson - 9550 2805
Saturday 12 February 2000 - Sunday 13 February 2000 Bushwalking - Budawangs
No firm plans yet as to where this will be, but it should be a trip that is suitable most people. We might venture down to visit the Noogal on the Corang River, we may visit Hidden Valley.

Easter 2000 for about 10 days Bushwalking - Tasmania
I'm planning to do an ascent of Mt Anne, and possibly the ranges to the south (I forget the names). Possibly followed by some bushwalking near Precipitous Bluff. Start thinking about this now.
