SUMMARY:Learn to lead round 3
DESCRIPTION:I have been informed that there is still demand to learn/practi
ce lead climbing so will be running another workshop at St Peters on Monda
y the 29th September! This is open to people who have never lead climbed b
efore as well as people who just want some practice or to get their St Pet
ers lead pass.\n\nDetails below shamelessly pillaged from the MVP Ameila V
:\n\nTo sign up for this trip you will need to be comfortable top rope cli
mbing an 18 as minimum experience. This means being able to both climb and
top rope belay comfortably and competently. Lead climbing experience is n
ot necessary. T\n\n\nWhat is Lead Climbing?\nSome definitions for those wh
o are unsure:\n\nTop roping is how you normally climb in indoor gyms. The
ropes are already set up\, and all you need to do is climb whilst your bel
ayer takes in the slack as you go. If you fall\, you hang in the same spot
.\n\nLead climbing is a bit more complicated. When you go climbing outdoor
s\, the ropes aren’t already set up. So\, the climber will have to put u
p quickdraws along the route to clip the rope into as they go. If you fa
ll and you’re above the bolt with the quickdraw\, you can fall a few met
res. In indoor gyms like St Peter’s\, the quickdraws are already in plac
 e. For outdoor climbing you’ll need to carry them with you and place the
m yourself.\n\n\n\nWe will be teaching how to lead belay with two devices:
GriGri and ATC. You’ll be placed in a group of three and doing “mo
ck leading” where one person will top rope belay you\, and the other wil
l be lead belaying you. St Peter’s does not allow leading with ATC so on
ly mock leading will be allowed with this device\, which is still good pra
ctice for outdoor trips. If you’re competent with a GriGri\, you can do
your lead test and move from mock lead to lead climbing and belaying. You
are not allowed to lead climb without passing a test from the gym staff.\n
\nWe can also teach how to clean anchors if we have time.\n\n&nbsp\;\nMock
  Leading\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nPre-Reading\nIf you’re keen to come along\, hav
 e a read-through of the following resources:\n\n How to Lead Climb\n How
to Lead Belay (ATC)\n How to Belay with a GriGri\n Petzl Access Book 1:
Belaying (Page 10 in particular)\n Petzl Access Book 5: Sport Climbing\
n\nBonus:\n\n How to Clean a Sport Anchor\n\n Note that the club teaches
to use a safety/personal anchor system (PAS) instead of a second quickdra
w.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost\nNote that all attendees will need to pay the St Pete
r’s entry fee. For UNSWOC members who are uni students\, we have a disco
unt on Mondays\, Wednesdays and Fridays that will reduce entry to $14.50.
Please bring a club card and student card. If you do not have a club card\
, let me know in the comment and I can bring one for you.\n\n\n\nHow to At
tend\nTo attend\, sign up below and answer the following in your comment:\
n\n Your climbing experience\n If you’ve lead climbing or lead belayed
before\n What you’re hoping to learn (e.g. try lead for the first time
\, tips and tricks to improve\, or help in getting your lead pass)\n How
many toddlers (3 yo) you think you could simultaneously beat in a fight (s
o I know you've read this far)\n\nAlso please make sure that a link to you
r Facebook is included on your UNSWOC profile so you can be added to a gro
up chat. If you don’t know how to edit this\, please included it in your
  comment.\n\n
