SUMMARY:Intermediate Mountaineering Practice - Blue Lake
DESCRIPTION:Warning: Expect a healthy dose of suffering (25-30kg packs\, te
mps down to -10 C\, high winds\, being slightly damp all weekend) and many
lessons to be learnt. Please only sign up for this trip if you're experie
nced taking care of yourself in cold &amp\; wet conditions\, and have a ge
nuine interest in getting into mountaineering.\n\nAsh B\, Jenny and I will
be leading a 3-day trip to Blue Lake to practice mountaineering skills. O
ur plan will be to drive down to Guthega very early Friday morning\, pick
up hire gear from Jindabyne\, snowshoe 7 km uphill to Mount Twynam and set
up camp that afternoon. Over Saturday and Sunday morning we will be pract
icing as much as we can of:\n\n- Crampon use\n- Self arresting a fall\n- S
now &amp\; ice anchors\n- Glacier travel &amp\; crevasse rescue\n- Avalanc
he safety\n- Steep snow technique\n- Snow shelters\n- Ice climbing\, if th
e conditions allow at Blue Lake\n\nWe will then snowshoe back to the cars
and drive back to Sydney Sunday night.\n\nThe make the best use of the lim
ited time we have down at the snow\, you will be expected to study up on s
ome of the skills in your own time in preparation for the weekend.\n\nThe
following is an incomplete gear list. Bringing inadequate gear is a seriou
s safety concern\, and we don't want to risk turning around the entire tri
p because you haven't brought a warm enough setup to sleep in:\n\n- Rigid
soled mountaineering boots with heel welts for crampons. The club cannot s
upply these\, so you will need to either purchase some yourselves\, or hir
 e from Jindabyne (https://www.wildernesssports.com.au/pages/backcountry-ge
ar-hire). Most of the following gear items can also be hired from Wilderne
ss Sports.\n- Snow shoes*\n- Crampons*\n- 4 season tent (consider sharing
 for warmth)\n- Snow pegs*\n- Winter weight sleeping bag (-10 C comfort)\,
or equivalent stacked sleeping bags and liners\n- 4 season insulated sleep
ing mat (can stack an inflatable mat on top of a foam mat)\n- Glacier glas
 ses or snow googles\n- Harness\n- Helmet\n- Hardshell pants &amp\; jacket\
n- Adequate thermals and insulating layers to layer under shells\n- Snow g
 aiters\n- Waterproof gloves &amp\; inners\n- Compass\n- Head torch &amp\;
spare batteries\n- Food &amp\; cooking\n- Water\n- Carry out toileting kit
(e.g. Wag Bags &amp\; poo tube)\n- GPS enabled phone &amp\; battery with
maps downloaded (I recommend https://en.mapy.cz/zakladni?mobilepromo=1 but
use whatever you want)\n- You will also be expected to help carry group g
 ear (ropes\, trad gear\, ice screws\, snow stakes\, ice axes\, anchors\, s
hovels\, first aid\, PLBs)\n- Hiking pack large enough to carry personal a
nd group gear (25-30 kg total)\n- Avalanche kit TBD\n\n*Will be supplied b
y the club\, although some people may need to hire crampons\n\nFor more de
tails on gear\, please refer to the gear list for the alpine skills course
we did in NZ in 2019.\n\nIn the comments please include:\n- Evidence that
you'll be able to take care of yourself all weekend (e.g. experience hiki
ng &amp\; camping in snow\, or cold/wet/windy conditions).\n- Why you want
to come on this trip.\n- If you have a car appropriate for driving up Gut
hega Rd with snow chains\, and how many seats.\n\nNote: Trip capacity is s
ubject to experience\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nFurther reading for those curious about
mountaineering in the club\, and where you can go with the beanie grant:\
