SUMMARY:Intermediate Mountaineering Practice - Blue Lake
DESCRIPTION:Warning: Expect a healthy dose of suffering (25-30kg packs\, te
mps down to -5 C\, high winds\, being slightly damp all weekend) and many
lessons to be learnt. Please only sign up for this trip if you're experien
ced taking care of yourself in cold &amp\; wet conditions\, and have a gen
uine interest in getting into mountaineering.\n\nCam and I will be leading
a 3-day trip to Blue Lake to practice mountaineering skills. Our plan wil
l be to drive down to Guthega very early Saturday morning\, pick up hire g
ear from Jindabyne\, snowshoe 7 km uphill to Mount Twynam and set up camp
that afternoon. Over Sunday and Monday morning we will be practicing as mu
 ch as we can of:\n\n- Crampon use\n- Self arresting a fall\n- Snow &amp\;
 ice anchors\n- Glacier travel &amp\; crevasse rescue\n- Avalanche safety\n
 - Steep snow technique\n- Snow shelters\n- Ice climbing\, if the condition
s allow at Blue Lake\n\nWe will then snowshoe back to the cars and drive b
ack to Sydney Monday night.\n\nThe make the best use of the limited time w
e have down at the snow\, you will be expected to study up on some of the
skills in your own time in preparation for the weekend.\n\nThe following i
s an incomplete gear list. Bringing inadequate gear is a serious safety co
ncern\, and we don't want to risk turning around the entire trip because y
ou haven't brought a warm enough setup to sleep in:\n\n- Rigid soled mount
aineering boots with heel welts for crampons. The club cannot supply these
\, so you will need to either purchase some yourselves\, or hire from Jind
 abyne (https://www.wildernesssports.com.au/pages/backcountry-gear-hire). M
ost of the following gear items can also be hired from Wilderness Sports.\
n- Snow shoes*\n- Crampons*\n- 4 season tent (consider sharing for warmth)
 \n- Snow pegs*\n- Winter weight sleeping bag (-5 C comfort)\, or equivalen
t stacked sleeping bags and liners\n- 4 season insulated sleeping mat (can
stack an inflatable mat on top of a foam mat)\n- Glacier glasses or snow
 goggles\n- Harness\n- Helmet\n- Sun hat\n- Hardshell pants &amp\; jacket\n
 - Adequate thermals and insulating layers to layer under shells\n- Snow ga
 iters\n- Waterproof gloves &amp\; inners\n- Compass\n- Head torch &amp\; s
 pare batteries\n- Food &amp\; cooking\n- 2L water capacity\n- Carry out to
ileting kit (e.g. Wag Bags &amp\; poo tube)\n- GPS enabled phone &amp\; ba
ttery with maps downloaded (I recommend https://en.mapy.cz/zakladni?mobile
promo=1 but use whatever you want)\n- You will also be expected to help ca
 rry group gear (ropes\, trad gear\, ice screws\, snow stakes\, ice axes\,
anchors\, shovels\, first aid\, PLBs)\n- Hiking pack large enough to carry
personal and group gear (25-30 kg total)\n\n*Will be supplied by the club
\n\nFor more details on gear\, please refer to the gear list for the alpin
e skills course we did in NZ in 2019.\n\nIn the comments please include:\n
 - Evidence that you'll be able to take care of yourself all weekend (e.g.
 experience hiking &amp\; camping in snow\, or cold/wet/windy conditions).\
n- Why you want to come on this trip.\n- If you have a car\, and how much
capacity.\n- Your mountaineering boot size if you're planning to hire from
Wilderness Sports. Usually 0.5-1 size larger than your street shoe size.
It's a lot easier to add thicker socks than to deal with jammed toes in ve
 ry rigid boots.\n\nNote: Trip capacity is subject to experience\n\n&nbsp\;
