BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 PRODID:-//wp-events-plugin.com//7.2.3.1//EN TZID:Australia/Sydney X-WR-TIMEZONE:Australia/Sydney BEGIN:VEVENT UID:3501@unswoc.org DTSTART;TZID=Australia/Sydney:20241010T170000 DTEND;TZID=Australia/Sydney:20241010T193000 DTSTAMP:20241007T054839Z URL:https://unswoc.org/wordpress/events/climbing-lvl-1-workshop-thursday-l edge-10-10-24/ SUMMARY:CLIMBING LVL 1 Workshop - Thursday (Ledge) 10/10/24 DESCRIPTION:Hi Everyone!\n\nMyself (Gabriel)\, and Amelia V will be running a level 1 Trip Leader CLIMBING workshop on the (Thursday) 10th of October \, starting at 5pm at THE LEDGE.\n\n \;\n\nThis workshop is for TLITs mainly\, but is open to anyone (upon approval) with serious intention of b ecoming a UNSWOC Trip leader.\n\nThe goal is the workshop is to cover the following learning items\;\n\n● Confident and competent in managing part icipants on trips\n● Understand and be able to identify rope types and t heir uses (single\, double\, half)\n● Understand the importance of end k nots\, including appropriate knots and when to use them\n● Understand fa ll factors and its impact on rope longevity\n● Teach and identify mistak es when lead belaying with an ATC and GriGri (or similar)including avoidin g tunnelling\, keeping hand on the brake strand at all times\, correctly g iving slack\, keeping fingers off the cam and hands below the device\n● Understand and practice climbing calls such as ‘TAKE!’\, ‘SLACK!’\ , ‘IN HARD!’\,‘LOWER!'\n● Teach the 5 step belaying process with a n ATC and GriGri\n● Demonstrate and identify the importance of clipping (stick clip high first bolt\, avoiding z-clipping and back-clipping\, when to clip high or clip at waist height\, clipping technique with each hand and gate combination)\n● Demonstrate and identify the effects of rope dr ag\n● Demonstrate and identify the importance of avoiding foot faults\n ● Understand and inspect different bolts such as U-bolts\, carrot bolts with bolt plates\, expansion bolts\n● Understand the importance of corre ct quickdraw orientation (spine facing direction of climb and dogbone stif f side to rope\, loose side to rock)\n● Demonstrate and understand the c orrect technique for clipping a quickdraw to a carrot bolt and fixed hange r\n● Set up and inspect a top rope setup with a quad anchor ensuring scr ews on gates are facing down\, gates are opposite and opposed\, locking ca rabiners are used instead of quickdraws\, and that the anchor is redundant and load is distributed\n● Demonstrate and teach the cleaning of a clim b ensuring two points of contact at all times\n● Demonstrate tying off a variety of belay devices (ATC\, GriGri)\n● Demonstrate self-rescue and is self-sufficient on a trip\n\n \;\n\nTHESE ARE WHAT WILL BE REVIEWED AND PRACTISED\, ALONG WITH THE GENERAL ROPEWORK SKILLS (LINK BELOW)\n\nYo u can find the complete list\, + the General ropework skills HERE\n\n  \;\n\nSignups will close the morning of. As a member\, you are expected to complete some pre-reading\, which i will send out to aproved members. Thi s is critical that you do this\, as it saves time and energy on the night. \n\nThis workshop isnt the be all end all\, but merely a start\, to learni ng the ins and outs of being a safe\, effective\, and fun trip leader for climbing. No matter your climbing discipline\, its imperative that you kno w all of the learning items.
